I agree. From what people have posted, as long as the containment building is intact, then it is just a question of time before the core will cool.

If there was any chance of a meltdown (versus exposed core), they would be pumping the appropriate materials into the containment buildings to permanently seal up the reactors.

Please, do not be concerned!

The only problem would be the remote sensing equipment that might have been damaged by the explosions.

But even if they do not a really good means of remote sensing, the amount of heat generated can be monitored by thermal imaging cameras.

I am certain that they can crunch data about core temperature based on the temperature of the containment building.

And, yes, satellites do have that ability, so folks in the puzzle palace as well the pentagon and in colorado can monitor this from a safe distance -- like a 100 miles above the earth...

Edano just ended news conf - said too much radiation. He also now wants help from US military!

They'll save their people by abandoning the plant but expect us to sacrifice our military to save them.

That movie took place after a global exchange of thermonuclear weapons. What’s the similarity?

I’m wondering how many of them are going to die over the next few months.

No. All that can be done has NOT been done.

It is critical that the fuel, both live and spent, be kept covered with water and that fires be put out. Otherwise, radioactive particles will be released.

Abandonment of those plants is terrible news.

In the 50’s the USA set off above ground HYDROGEN BOMBS in the Pacific, don’t you think the radiation from those bad boys had a better chance of damaging things here in the USA than civilian nuclear reactors?

Not good but if the containment holds I don’t think those reactors can get too out of control. If fuel is exposed then you have greater chance of exposure.

They obv have high radiation on site now teh issue is how far can it spread.

I saw the miniseries remake. It was the most depressing train wreck I’ve ever seen.

I’ve thought of it too often since Friday.

The problem is that spent fuel is kept on the roof of these plants, under water, OUTSIDE OF THE CONTAINMENT VESSEL. There is nothing between them and the atmosphere but water.

And now the water level is down and the used rods are on fire, releasing radioactivity with nothing to keep it out of the atmosphere.

I always wondered why they made reactors so big

If they can power a nuke sub with one, it seems they can make them small enough to transort around.

I read somewhere that one company has a unit that can power a city- and it comes in a box that you bury in the ground. After 20 years you dig it up and put in a new one when the fuke runs out

They also confirmed that core is exposed

Which core?

In the book, it was massive use of Cobalt bombs by the Soviets and Chinese.

Yes same as always - the US military to the rescue.

NHK is currently showing live images from Fukushima, where white smoke continues to billow from reactor 3. http://bit.ly/e0LYBv
