Paul Allen buys restored MiG
Russian-made jet carefully restored, flown over county
By Debra Smith, Herald Writer
EVERETT -- Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen is the new owner of a restored Russian-made fighter jet.
Vulcan Warbirds Inc., a corporation associated with Allen, closed the sale on the MiG-29 on March 9.
The jet is temporarily on display at Allen's Flying Heritage Collection at Paine Field.
As soon as the weather is right, paperwork is completed and a qualified pilot can travel to the area, the jet will be flown to an undisclosed location, said Liz Davidson, manager of the collection.
The MiG-29 is the same former Ukrainian air force jet that entrepreneur and aviation enthusiast John Sessions purchased and painstakingly restored with Morgan Aircraft Restorations in Arlington.
The Herald chronicled the yearslong project and first flight of the iconic Russian warbird over Snohomish County in Feb. 6 story.
"I think it's fair to say the purchaser is Vulcan Warbirds and behind all that is Paul Allen," Sessions said. "They've been interested in a MiG-29 for a long time."
Allen followed the progress of the jet through its restoration and recent test flights. Those test flights resulted in "no squawk" -- in other words, nothing needed to be repaired, Sessions said.
The Flying Heritage Collection filed a lien in 2009 on the aircraft through the Federal Aviation Administration so they would know if it was sold to someone else, Davidson said.
Allen started collecting aircraft in 1998 and the collection's museum includes mainly World War II planes. He became interested in MiG-29s around 2002, when it became possible for private citizens to purchase them on the open market, she said.

Last time I saw Allen he was 150 pounds to big to get into any fighter cockpit.
I mean, it could be worse (flags from France or Russia) but hey, Paul, you ashamed of the Greatest Country in the World, without which you and you FAR LEFT MOONBAT partner (Gates) would NEVER have achieved such success or riches???
BS.
The F-14 is much bigger & sports variable geometry (swing) wings. The MiG-29 was basically an attempt to develop something comparable to the F-16 Falcon. It’s a pretty slick aircraft.
LOLOL!! Touché!
Is that pregnant? At least it looks experimental by the tail number. But we did put the very ugly (although very capable) A-6 into production.
Rich boys and their toys......
´Hope the ejection seat is working.
I’m thinking the correct reply rather than BS would be “I think you’re mistaken” - there is a theory out there that the F-15 was a knockoff in design of the MIG25 which came out a year earlier. It landed in Japan by a pilot fleeing either China or Russia. We took it apart, studied it, and crated it up and sent it back. You can read various articles both pro and con. Just saying.
“You should get your money back from your collage...”
I paste stuff in my collage.
No, really. I break into the dorms and put up radical conservative posters. V!
It was one of the two finalists (Boeing’s entry) in the JSF VTOL competition. The F35 (from Lockheed Martin) won the contract.
Seems Paul decided to mainly cash out and spend his days yachting around with supermodels and movie stars for company. In passing, he also has people like George Soros showing up for his New Years party
Just saying that the airframe looked almost identical to the MIG25.
