DeMint won't back Romney without repudiation of Mass. health law
The Hill ^ | March 17, 2011 | Michael O'Brien

Posted on 03/17/2011 12:13:09 PM PDT by americanophile

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) "would never consider" endorsing Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for president again in 2012 unless Romney repudiates the health reforms he sought as governor, a source close to DeMint said Thursday.

A source close to the conservative icon emphasized that, despite comments to The Hill indicating that Romney shouldn't shoulder all the political blame for the Massachusetts healthcare plan, DeMint wouldn't endorse Romney again unless he admits the plan was mistaken. "It's obvious Jim was just trying to be nice to the guy he backed over McCain, as many conservatives did in 2008," the source said. "But he would never consider backing Romney again unless he admits that his Massachusetts health care plan was a colossal mistake."

DeMint told The Hill that he hadn't decided who he would endorse in the 2012 Republican presidential primary and said that Romney wasn't entirely to blame for the elements of the Massachusetts healthcare plan that conservatives now deplore.

I usually support and like DeMint...But this is a major bone of contention for me!

I think DeMint knows Romney will not disown his child. The Mass Health law is Romney's baby.

I was wayyyy crushed when I read that De Mint supported Romney in 2008. I just knew he was the real thing but...he’s off my list which is getting shorter by the day. It’s getting down to Palin, Bachman, West, Cain, Rubio...I think Cain did something which I can’t remember so he may also be off the list. I don’t know but recently Steve King has been entering my mind. I think he’s the fire behind Michele Bachman from what I can gather.

Meant to add, the voodoo Republicans are most likely twisting conservatives’ arms to the breaking point right now. They truly are lock step with that other party on preserving the supremacy of Versailles on the Potomac.

Mitt Romney, 2008 Republican Primary Presidential Debates:
‘I like mandates, mandates work.’

This isn't from an interview with a leftist newspaper, or old debates in a leftist state campaign, or whatnot, but the primary debates during the last presidential election. Romney can repudiate RomneyCare all he wants, but he's given us a candid look into his mind.

DeMint has completed the Myth Romney school of political expediency. The final thesis is as follows: 1. Make statement. 2. Receive heat and blow-back for making said statement. 3. Change statement.

DeMint, grow a backbone. Say what you mean, mean what you say, and get your finger out of the wind!

So did Limbaugh, Hannity, Levin, the National Review, etc. It was Romney or McCain.

This was my main “question mark”, in ‘08, about Senator DeMint: Why did he endorse Mitt Romney for POTUS, instead of endorsing any of the conservative candidates also running?

Too bad DeMint APPROVES of the BIG-DIG coverup,
and Romney's abdication of the Mass. Constitution,
and Romney's policy of BAD GOVERNMENT,
and Romney's Support of IAG and TARP,
and the Romney Islam-911 Victory Mosque connection.

At least, DeMint had the courtesy to let people know
early of his worthlessness.

"(The GroundZero Mosque) cleared its final hurdle ….
developers plan to build the $100 million center which will include a mosque.
Since its incipient stages in July 2009, when a Muslim-run real-estate development
company purchased the damaged, vacant building and land where the new center
will be built, the project has sparked controversy and debate.
.... the tattered building that was bought by the Muslim real estate company had
been owned by a subsidiary of Bain Capital, a company Romney founded in 1984.

So it’s OK if his company can profit off the sale of the land ."

“Bain Capital, has cut checks totaling $90,000 to Romney’s operation. “

“...flawed...”

Exactly. IMHO, he has proved since the ‘08 campaign exactly what he is, i.e., the stereotypical, career politician driven to the next level of office/election in order to quench his own desire for power and too willing to compromise principle for political ends; but, he is just one of whom the elite are/will be pushing for the nomination because he will be putty in their hands. As for me, I’ll take Palin or Demint or, gasp, Huckabee at this point.

Yes, the problem with Romney is that his underlying political philosophy seems to be either undeveloped, and thus subject to the politics of the minute, or considerably at odds with conservative orthodoxy. Neither bodes well for a nation that is in need of someone with principled determination.

Damage control. Rommey has already proven he will say and do anuything and then change his stripes when it suits his purpose. No one is fooled any longer.

"But he would never consider backing Romney again unless..."

The word "consider" adds another layer, and it makes me believe DeMint will not endorse Romney in any event in a GOP primary.

Oh yeah.

I seriously doubt that their quick response will do much to mitigate the fact that conservatives just got a huge reminder that DeMint was a Romney supporter, or to flush DeMint's deceptive spin on what RomneyCare was and is down the memory hole.

I have to laugh. DeMint coming down on exact opposite sides of such an important issue ALL IN ONE DAY is extremely Romneyesque.

Great idea, but a repudiation is nothing more than a string of words. It takes time to live down a reputation for crawling into bed with the enemies of western civilization; time and a whole slough of actual deeds. I wouldn’t be impressed.

It's an old cartoon. "Pro-Romney-care" and "Anti-Romneycare" can now be added.

Yeah, but DeMint was a little more involved with Mitt besides having to choose the lesser of three evils...

Romney names DeMint national co-chair

The fact of the matter is that DeMint has always been in Romney's pocket, but has been hiding it well since the 2008 election, until he slipped up today.

...it looks like Bain did own that property once, but the current owner purchased it from the Pomerantz family in 2009. Which means there’s been at least one other owner between Bain and El-Gamal, and in any event, Romney hasn’t been with Bain Capital since 1999, a full 10 years prior. I don’t see much of a connection, and certainly not enough to call it the “Romney Islam-911 Victory Mosque.”

When it came to challenging Obamacare and the individual mandate, DeMint was in front leading the charge. I’ll take his actions over words taken out of context any day.
