Wisconsin's Radical Break (Professor plays the McCarthy Card)
New York Times ^ | March 22, 2011 | William Cronon, Prof of history, geography and environment at UW-M

Posted on 03/22/2011 3:03:11 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

....Mr. Walker’s conduct has provoked a level of divisiveness and bitter partisan hostility the likes of which have not been seen in this state since at least the Vietnam War. Many citizens are furious at their governor and his party, not only because of profound policy differences, but because these particular Republicans have exercised power in abusively nontransparent ways that represent such a radical break from the state’s tradition of open government.

..as a centrist and a lifelong independent — I have found myself returning...to the question posed by the lawyer Joseph N. Welch during the hearings that finally helped bring down another Wisconsin Republican, Joe McCarthy, in 1954: “Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?”

Scott Walker is not Joe McCarthy. Their political convictions and the two moments in history are quite different. But there is something about the style of the two men — their aggressiveness, their self-certainty, their seeming indifference to contrary views — that may help explain the extreme partisan reactions they triggered. McCarthy helped create the modern Democratic Party in Wisconsin by infuriating progressive Republicans, imagining that he could build a national platform by cultivating an image as a sternly uncompromising leader willing to attack anyone who stood in his way. Mr. Walker appears to be provoking some of the same ire from adversaries and from advocates of good government by acting with a similar contempt for those who disagree with him.

The turmoil in Wisconsin is not only about bargaining rights or the pension payments of public employees. It is about transparency and openness. It is about neighborliness, decency and mutual respect. Joe McCarthy forgot these lessons of good government, and so, I fear, has Mr. Walker. Wisconsin’s citizens have not.

THERE WAS AN EVENT, CALLED AN ELECTION, THAT FLIPPED WISCONSIN POLITICS FROM DEMOCRAT TO GOP. THE PEOPLE SPOKE. THE UNIONS WANT THEIRS DESPITE THE REALITIES OF THE STATE'S FINANCIAL PLIGHT. DEMOCRATIC PARTY SENATORS FLED THE STATE AND REFUSED TO RETURN. THE LEGISLATURE VOTED. THE PARTISAN JUDGE RULED. THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE IS BEING BLOCKED.

Wow. This is a guy who has no grasp on cause and effect, i.e. reality. I fell sorry for the folks who have literally bought into his fuzzy logic.

If this is the reaction to a simple effort to cut expenses and balance the state budget so that the people can live within their means, then Wisconsin - and, if this should prove to be typical, very possibly the entire nation - is doomed.

This "educator" (ugh) accuses the Wisconsin Senate of "exercising power in abusively non-transparent ways" and uses this premise to excuse and allow for the vile reaction of Democrats to the decision.

Libtards need to look at the reaction of the right when Congress passed Obamacare in the middle of the night on Christmas Eve. Dems did most of their positioning in "abusively non-transparent ways". Did the right burst out in violent reaction, acting like a bunch of two-year olds who find out their playground rules have been changed? NO! We didn't like it, but we know when we've been beaten and we took the legal and logical steps to start reversing the process.

Left wingers love beards. What is it? Does the hair on the face come first or does the pinko come first and then the hair?

Right off, he displays the left's penchant for dissembling. This guy is as "centrist" as Pol Pot.

The people voted out the Left but the Left holds the voters in contempt. That vote threw a wrench into their plans to deny us our freedoms.

The thing that will doom us is whether we allow activist judges to hold sway over the legislature.

Radical Leftist revolutionaries want to dismantle the foundations of our government.

A cautionary warning:

A Philosopher's Warning [excerpt] “……According to Carvalho, the Left continues to consolidate its position in Latin America. “It has been following a strategy explicitly presented in a Chinese communist congress a few years ago: to take power by means of legal elections and then erode the democratic system from the inside to prevent the opposition from ever coming back to power in future elections,” he explained. “This is to say: they win a first match and then proceed to change the rules of the game. In Brazil this strategy has led to spectacular results. First, the idea was to limit the political field to only two contestants: radical Left and moderate Left. All other forces were dismantled by means of targeted tax audits and corruption charges which did not even need to be proved, since they destroyed reputations once and for all as soon as they were trumpeted by the media.”

Could America’s traditional ally in South America be under the control of a totalitarian movement? How could we miss such an astonishing development? “American opinion-makers have a wrong view of Brazil,” said Carvalho, “because the Brazilian government has always acted in a two-faced and camouflaged way. On the one hand, it has been courting American investors to strengthen the Brazilian economy, but on the other, it has been taking advantage of economic success in order to consolidate the Leftist sway at home, to make impossible any political opposition which is not that of the moderate left, and to give effective support to the rise of the Left in neighboring countries, while protecting openly terrorist organizations like the FARC and the Chilean MIR, which thus have ended up controlling the local criminal organization and getting the monopoly of the drug market in Brazil. In Venezuela, Hugo Chavez has also dismantled the opposition, but using more blatant methods.”

Since Brazil harbors the core of the communist movement in Latin America, how is the anti-American campaign progressing? According to Carvalho the Left is not always able to move forward. “It follows an alternating rhythm,” he explained, “according to whether the important thing at the moment is to flatter foreign investors or to unify and strengthen the Latin American Left.” “For more than ten years,” Carvalho noted, “I have been warning that the Worker’s Party [in Brazil] is not an organization like the others; that is, willing to alternate with the opposition in power. The Worker’s Party is a revolutionary organization committed to reshaping the state and the entire society after its image and likeness, by using, for this purpose, the vilest and most corrupt resources. Since no one has ever believed any of this, everyone has kindly disarmed himself in the face of this rising party, and now that it controls everything, no one can do anything against it. Brazil is governed by a single party which has several names. I see no prospect of changing this situation in the short or medium term.”…. [end excerpt]

Blame the media. A communist will do what a communist does. But the media spin is what causes the real problem.

That’s the best description of Barak Obama I’ve seen all week.

Again—that’s Obama to a T.

The rule of law has sustained our freedoms. The Left is ignoring a FL judge's ruling on Obamacare and it continues apace, while a county judge in WI blocks publication of the bill and everything comes to a halt.

The Left has no respect for the rule of law.

Yes! They like it when their guy flips a bird at the country.
Yet let a state legislature govern according to the wishes of the people (AZ, WI, etc) and watch all hell break loose.

You hit it on the head—states. Liberals loathe the idea of states’ rights, which they always say is ‘code’ for no civil rights for minorities and/or slavery. (I know it sounds stupid—I live among liberals so you don’t have to, and can tell you that’s what they think.)

Liberals claim to be about ‘a RAINBOW of DIVERSITY’ but that applies strictly to skin color—they hate non-liberal non-whites. Not even conservatives, but those who aren’t liberal.

That’s the insanity about their BS about diversity. They loathe states’ rights when they should be all for states deciding as they wish on so many issues. Hell, if California wants to make it illegal to not be gay, let ‘em, as long as the majority there wants it I DON’T CARE.

Just let MY state and those who think as I do vote to support marriage in THEIR states, and restrict killing babies in THEIR states—hey, that’s true diversity, isn’t it?

Yes, it is—in fact, a nation with strong states’s rights (local control—by The People you lefties are always saying should be in charge) is the definition of a multicultural, diverse nation.

Which, of course, is why they’re against them—because they’re against diversity where it counts—under the skin, not on it.
