The level of radioactive iodine detected in seawater near the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant was 1,250 times above the maximum level allowable, the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said Saturday, in a development that indicates contamination from the ruined reactors is spreading.
Tokyo Electric Power Co. meanwhile admitted it neglected to alert workers when it detected high radiation in a reactor building nine days ago.
The iodine-131 in the seawater was detected at 8:30 a.m. Friday, about 330 meters south of the plant's drain outlets. Previously, the highest amount recorded was about 100 times above the permitted level.

IMHO, the benefits of the iodine in the water to help cleanse wounds more than offsets any radiation risks.
Iodine-131 has a half life of 8 days. Mostof it will be gone in 16 days.

I-131 has a half life of 8.0197 days, so effectively all of it will be gone in 80.197 days.
However, it looks like there's more where it came from. As well as even nastier stuff.
I wouldn't drink the water from around the reactor. But there are parts of Nevada where I wouldn't want to drink the ground water, either -- and that's more than 50 years after the fact.
If I lived in Japan (away from the reactors) I probably wouldn't lose any sleep over this but it doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in the company's executives.

Why would I go all they way there for the small benefit? Those levels are not much higher than normal background radiation. It’s not worth cost get over there. Now if there was a full meltdown then I may consider it.
She said people exposed to the japanese plant radiation are now less likely to get cancer!

Many of us who are pointing out that the presence of radiation is not an end-of-the-world situation actually work with radioisotopes.
Whatever the reading at the outlet, it is not the reading a meter away. Three things are going on here which disperse the radiation: the 131-I becomes quickly dispersed in the seawater, beta particles (the radioactive emission) are blocked by a few inches of water (the exact thickness depends on the energy of the particles), and even in air, the strength of the emission is inversely proportional to the square of the distance away.
What that last means is that an emission of 72 units at a distance of 1 radius becomes 18 units at a distance of 2, 8 units at a distance of 3, and 4.5 units at a distance of 4. It drops off pretty fast.
Furthermore, as people have already pointed out, the half life is so short that in a couple of months, the radiation will be indistinguishable from background. In general, radioisotopic wastes are stored for 6 half-lifes, which puts them at background levels of radiation, and then thrown away as regular waste.

There may be, but whether or not they become a problem will depend on their mobility and the mechanisms necessary to spread them around. Can you tell us specifically what forms you are concerned with? We can then determine if there is a significant threat of their being more generally released.
