M6.5 quake jolts northeastern Japan, tsunami warning issued [Revised to 6.1, per USGS]

TOKYO, March 28 (AP) - (Kyodo)—A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 jolted northeastern Japan on Monday morning, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The agency issued a tsunami warning following the 7:24 a.m. quake.

Yikes. Not huge, but not tiny either. They’ve gotten hundreds of aftershocks, but how many are this big?

There will be aftershocks for months. They can be almost as big as the main earthquake.

Not sure why this 6.5 is more significant than the one two days ago that was 6.8.There were at least 4 last week 6.0 or larger. MANY 5.0’s.

There have been many 6. aftershocks since the historic 9.0.

This one was only 5km deep. I don’t know how shallow the other after shocks have been or if tsunami warnings have been issued for them either.
