The General is only trying to protect his soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines. He doing what any good commander would do, take care of his people.

How much time in a combat zone do you have? I’m willing to bet not nearly as much as Gen Petraeus. So it seems, you need to shut up.

That doesn't matter. He has absolutely NO business criticizing an American citizen who is exercising free political speech on American soil.

And the only way he can figure out how to do that is to criticize free speech in America and imply it should be abridged somehow? He is going to blame his failings as a commander in Afghanistan on American free speech? It seems the commander is the one who needs to shut up and try to do his job without the necessity of whining about US free speech rights. Or he can be replaced with someone who can.

There is no more effective way of protecting your own troops than by killing the enemy's troops. Trying to convert them to secular humanism while sniveling in the dirt of a foreign land is a far less effective strategy.

Time in service equates to always being correct? I don’t think so. Far from it.

It’s difficult for me to retain my civility. Petraeus is not taking care of the soldiers under his command. He is endangering them with his politically correct bull crap. That includes an ROE in Afghanistan that prohibits our soldiers from defending themselves if so-called non-combatants are even in the vicinity of the terrorist shooters.

As long as one American soldier—let alone my son— is being directed to fight with two arms tied behind their backs I’ll speak out. It is my God given right to do so. Who are you, anyway, to tell me what I may or may not say?

Apparently you have the same problem with an American’s right to free speech as does Petraeus. What other parts of our Constitution do you deem unimportant?

Sheesh!

For the record I’m a retired US Army 05 (LTC). I served during the Vietnam and 1st Gulf War. I readily concede I was not in combat. However, as a student of soldiering for 28 years, and a history buff most of my life, I have learned some things along the way. I don’t have to have been a teacher to know bad teaching when I see it. I need not have been in combat to understand the political class—including the likes of Petraeus—are currently sending our soldiers in harm’s way with no intention of winning.

Our men and women are being killed and maimed. For what purpose? We’ve been at this idiocy for over 10 years and there is no end in sight. The Islamoterrorists, and the states that support them, should have been crushed by 2004.

Do you have any grasp how much of this country’s human and material wealth is being expended to put down a bunch of 17th Century religious zealots. Their only real weapons: A willingness to kill defenseless and innocent people and oil. We have the military strength to remedy the former and our own energy resources to remedy the later.

Why are we not doing so?

Petraeus is an idiot to show respect to that book. Can anyone imagine Ike or Patton condemning the burning of copies of Mein Kampf?

If things are so silly, that a general actually believe the best way to protect the troops is to act like the enemy’s philosophical literature is worthy of respect,,, then we might as well come home.

The best way to protect the troops is for them to inspire total fear. But we can’t do that because the enemy knows we can’t use supporting arms, and if we do too well, or even accidently kill a “civilian”, the FBI and our generals will prosecute.

And yes,,i have time.
