In my great grandmother’s day, teachers were primarily paid in room and board.
I don’t know about everywhere, or what years you’re talking about, but a little google searching seems to say that the average salary of teachers around 1910 (all I could really find) suggests that they were close to the same as for other jobs. I admit that surprised me.
