Congress Strikes a Budget Deal, Averts Shutdown
Fox News ^ | Apr 9, 2011

DEVELOPING: Congressional leaders, with barely an hour to go before a federal government, announced late Friday night they had reached a deal to fund the government through the end of the fiscal year.

House Speaker John Boehner, speaking briefly to reporters after talks had concluded, said the plan was to pass one last short-term spending resolution Friday night to buy lawmakers the time needed to prepare and pass the final budget bill.

Yeah, that's true. They said 100 billion, they got it to 88 billion. Not the worst showing. Some very poor showing on the riders, but hey, maybe those were throwaways to begin with....

In spite of all the whining here on this thread, I agree that this is a pretty good showing. Many of the riders will be voted on as separate bills later, so some blue dog democrats will have their true colors shown if they don't vote for the riders. I can live with this.

I don’t understand why so many FReepers are blaming this budget deal on Boehner. It’s not his fault, and there’s only so much the House Republicans can do about it, until the GOP retakes the senate and the White House. The huge deficit isn’t Boehner’s fault, it’s the results of all the dumbed-down, uninvolved, uninformed Americans who voted for Obama in 2008 and voted for democrats for the senate in 2008 and 2010. It’s the dolts who reelected people like Boxer and Reid who are the problem here.

If the House Republicans tried to hold out for more, the government would shut down and while fiscal conservatives would applaud that shut down, 70% of Americans would oppose the shut down and then of course, the news media would spin the whole thing as being caused by the “extreme draconian budget cuts” that Republicans demanded and the democrats refused to go along with, to save the children. The GOP would even up getting blamed for the shut down by most dumbed-down voters and the whole incident would hurt us in the 2012 elections. The problem is this folks: we didn’t win enough elections in 2006, 2008, and 2010. Rumsfeld screwed up the post-invasion tactics in Iraq. Bush let Rumsfeld run the war when he should have let the Joint Chiefs run it, then the resulting casualties played right into the MSM’s hands and they used it to thump the GOP in 2006. Bush also screwed up by making sub-prime mortgage standards too lax and not understanding the risk of mortgage defaults to the economy. Republicans have made mistakes and we’ve paid the price in election defeats. (Just for the record, I do believe Bush had the right philosophy and strategy on almost every issue, but his tactical implementation of strategy was seriously flawed on Iraq and the US economy.)

So now we have to counter-attack and win more elections, retake the senate and the White House. Then we can pass Ryan’s budget plan and Zero won’t be there to veto it. So will you all please stop blaming Boehner...at least he won his election to the House the last three times.

I’m not going to go insane with anger towards Republicans, but we must elect more conservative members in 2012 than many who are there now.

AH! now THERE, we can agree without reservation! :)

2012 is the hill we choose to fight, and if necessary, die on

Right on.

I have a feeling that this deal will look pretty bad for Reid and Brack as the details come out - a total of $80 or so billion in cuts, requiring Senate floor votes on defunding Planned Parenthood and Obamacare, a ban on funding DC abortions, and a restoration of the the DC school voucher funding that TOTUS had cut.

It's far from perfect, but it's not a bad baby step.

This will absolutely, positively be the last CR until the next CR. This is another example that we do not have a two party system. The OP(formerly the GOP) and the RATs are two factions of one big socialist Republicrat machine.

The Tea Party needs to disassociate themselves with the Republicrats. The Tea Party thinks they are taking back the socialist light Republican wing of the Republicrat machine but it is the latter co-opting the former. The Tea Party is the proverbial frog in the pot of boiling water not knowing they are being cooked until it is too late.

Some further legislative action on PP is in the agreement but I think the baby-killers will end up recieving their federal money through the 2011 fiscal year.

Perhaps not in 2012 though- and then this will have been a much bigger success than it seems now.

Mega cuts from proposed spending in 2314. We will have to de-fund the sister ship of the Enterprise and borrow from the planet Vulcan to pay our welfare bills...Yes this is a joke and so are the so called “deals”.

The presidency is the most significant of all because of the President’s arsenal includes the veto power and the “bully pulpit.”

No. The House is the most significant of all because all Federal spending bills must originate there. This means that our Republican-led House just ordered the Fed to print up new money to fund at least half a trillion in federal spending over the next several months. It also means that our Republican-led House appropriated some of that new money to be handed over to Planned Parenthood so that they can continue to lead the nation in abortions performed.

This last part is especially galling to me. We could have exposed this lie of the left once and for all. Boehner should have proposed giving that money instead to other health clinics and services that do cancer screenings, but do not perform abortions. It was so damn simple for the Republicans to do, but they caved to the culture of death once again.

And now that Planned Parenthood is getting their cut for the next several months (estimated $180 MILLION), did the Republicans consider how much of that $180 million will end up in the campaign chests of their Dem opponents? Idiots. All of them. Baraq Obama and Harry Reid are laughing their butts off right about now.

AS Rush has put it, we own the facts but the 'rats own the narrative. He is right. Their spin on events is the accepted truth until overturned by overwhelming pressure to the contrary, pressure which is usually lacking because republicans don't care for the street fighting necessary to mount a propaganda offensive. But that is what the Nation requires--fighting fire with fire, not baking soda.

Use your anger to get the damaging stories about Planned Parenthood circulated on the Internet (email, facebook, etc).

Early on when I joined Freerepublic, I urged people to use the concept of the Minutemen of the American Revolution.

I know at least one poster that chose their Freerepublic handle/posting name based on that.

Anger [and frustration] can be focused in a positive way.

Jesus got angry at the moneychangers in the Temple and made an example of them.

Just get angry at Planned Parenthood...

Boehner is political toaste

Take a closer look at his district. The odds of him defeating a primary challenger verge on near certainty.

When turning a car, you can wrench the steering wheel so violently, you lose control.... or you start your turn with, as you put it, a baby step.

I agree. I also agree that it is far from perfect.

In Wisconsin, an attempt by unions to steal an election and intimidate a state have failed and backfired horribly on them. Clear win for our side.

This is true. It points up what can be accomplished with true leadership and by not caving. I fear this is not the situation nationally.

Technically the Government has just shut down, since the CR has not passed the House or been signed.
