DEVELOPING: Congressional leaders, with barely an hour to go before a federal government, announced late Friday night they had reached a deal to fund the government through the end of the fiscal year.
House Speaker John Boehner, speaking briefly to reporters after talks had concluded, said the plan was to pass one last short-term spending resolution Friday night to buy lawmakers the time needed to prepare and pass the final budget bill.

But Boener folded for 40 billion this round which is going to leave them at a total of 78.5 billion, short of the 100 billion promised.
Jeff, in all due respect, I believe that your numbers are in error.
The $61 billion objective equates to the $100 billion promise -- as applied to the fiscal year (which is October-September). Over the calendar year February-January, which is all that the new Congress can actually control, that would result in $100 billion in savings.
To my knowledge, there has never been an expectation of more than $61 billion in savings on the FY 2011 budget -- which ends in September. Thus, a $78.5 billion savings represents a meaningful gain.
In the total scheme of things, of course, that's a relative pittance. But it establishes that the GOP stood their ground...and prevailed.
Which bodes well for the larger battles soon to come...
Frankly, I didn't beleive that poll. My gut tells me that an electorate malleable enough to elect a community organizer President of the United States is an electorate fickle enough to remember how much they love the loot Uncle Sam sends them. It would only take a day or two of sad news stories to turn Barry Obama into Saint Barack, Defender of the Little Guy. :)
And please do not misunderstand (and I trust you don’t): I’m going to be in the front line for the 2012 debate. I just honestly don’t feel we did all we could this time around. You are welcome to try to change my mind.
Time for true confessions: you may be right. I just don't think we have the momentum, yet, to overcome a Democrat Senate (with a few RINOs mixed in) and Obama in the Oval Office. We need to keep the pressure on, build up steam, and smash the gates in 2012.
There is something else that Reid gave up. There is a chess game going on that may not be obvious. Reid agreed to hold votes on defunding obamacare and planned parenthood.
So big deal, you might say; they won't pass in the senate. Correct, but McCaskill, Tester, and Manchin (all in increasingly red states) will have to vote or find an excuse to be out of town. And odds are (if they want reelection) their opponents will use their votes on these issues in campaign ads. These are not votes Reid wanted to hold.
Using that kind of logic, I guess the alternative is to spend ourselves into oblivion and our country will turn into Greece or Iceland or Ireland with an economic meltdown. We can't continue to borrow 42 cents out of every federal dollar we spend. Our country and economy will stop running.
Don't overestimate the people. In the present era, we can only advance our cause with independent support. However independents are not independent because they're wiser than the rest of us, nor is it because they reserve judgment until diligently analyzing the proposals of both sides. They're independent because they're fickle and easily swayed by irrational and emotional appeals.
I can understand that take. However, I don't see Rasmussen missing by the margin that would be necessary to prove that a majority didn't want a stand to be taken. And I think you'd probably agree that Chairman Zero already holds that title with his slavishly devoted, sycophantic media.

You used Dieppe as a metaphor before, Tony, so let me try it now: Dieppe was a probing raid, designed to show the Allies what they didn't know. It wasn't conducted with nearly the force needed to hold a Continental bridgehead. Yet, it was tried because it was needed. How will we ever know our strength if we don't try to use it? Scott Walker did in Wisconsin, and results of Tuesday's elections have borne out his confidence.
We have to try. We have to do better. We have to try to cut this government by every thin dime we possibly can and we have to try as many times as we can until we succeed. On this issue, I must say I'm an absolutist.
How is it, then, that the Republicans went into the negotiations looking for $61 billion in cuts...and got $78.5 billion?
And they came out of them without the onus of "wanting to shut down the government"?
Newt lost the battle in 1995 because he went into the negotiations with a chip on his shoulder -- vocally wanting to shut down the government. He lost. He got no spending cuts. And he pissed away the conservative momentum.
Boehner got what he wanted...a little bit more even. And he didn't damage the Republican brand in the process.
Isn't winning what the game is about?

If they caved over the political heat of 100 billion, they will melt and evaporate in a battle of 14,000 billion.
That’s a good point.
The last election showed that no marketing was needed by the Republicans. The people made the decision that the RAT party needed to be stopped. Their votes showed that there was a very clear national mandate for the Republicans to implement.
What we saw tonight is that this R leadership is not capable of doing that. The new Congress was not sent there to negotiate & cave in to the RATS. They were sent there to stop them in their tracks & not make deals that end with both sides congratulating themselves & each other.

The Dems will vote for contnuing to fund Obamacare and Planned Parenthood. We have already heard their arguments. They want to provide health care for everyone, especially women and children. And we already have them on record for voting for them.
The GOP, lost Credibility today. The threat to close the Government is useless now.
