Deal falls short of GOP cut pledge; 'As good as we could get,' says Boehner (We lost!)
The Hill ^ | Saturday April 9, 2011 | Bob Cusack

The bipartisan deal struck Friday falls short of the House Republican campaign pledge to cut $100 billion in fiscal 2011 spending.

The pact cuts $78.5 billion when compared to President Obama's fiscal 2011 budget request, which was never enacted.

The accord cuts $39 billion in actual spending, $22 billion less than bill the House passed in February.

In a brief interview, Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) told The Hill the agreement was "as good a deal as we could get."

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), chairman of the Republican Study Committee, said he expects "significant" opposition from conservatives, both to the short-term fix and the long-term spending bill. He said he will vote against both

We control one half of one half of the policy-making branches of government and have a certified America-hating Marxist usurper in the White House who is actively trying to bankrupt the country, and yet we still managed to get the largest budget cut in history, and that’s only for a half-year budget. Annualized the cuts are almost $80 billion. Given the circumstances, this is better than we could have hoped for, and a lot better than Gingrich ever got from Bubba. If Nancy were still speaker, we would be talking about the biggest INCREASE in history right now._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________HUH? No one controls anything in Washington but the good ole boys at the fed and they tell people what to do in government and how much they want from the us and the debt is passed on to the sheep to pay.The founders warned us people.

An analogy of what happened tonight:

You currently owe $144,000 to the bank.

You make $18,000 a year. You usually spend $36,000 a year. This year though, you’re only going to spend $35,600.

So, instead of your debt going up $18,000 this year, it will only go up $17,400.

So now you’ll only owe $161,400 to the bank at the end of the year, rather then $162,000, all because you cut a deal and reduced spending :) Great job RINOS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last I saw we won in WI......... We don’t have the senate or the WH, this was a huge win given we are only one spoke in the wheel. They will have to vote on what they agree to vote on, remember we have another battle coming up very fast... the debt ceiling. Ya’ll have to look at this as moving the line forward, sometimes it will be inches, sometimes more...

You act like this is 2003 and we controlled every part of government. This is just the first step in a long battle.

“Let’s take back control of those institutions in 2012. THEN we can pursue much smaller government.”

Didn’t the Republicans have control from 2001 to 2007? Government then grew at a rate that had not been seen since LBJ introduced the Great Society. Unless the Tea Party can both get the RINOs out and field electable candidates who genuinely favor limited government instead, it’s hopeless.

GOP is nothing more than a cardboard opposition poster organization pure and simple! Their number one goal is to blunt real reform and conservative values by posing, but not producing.
Call me a liar when the GOP makes a real stand!

In 2003 Boehner was raising the debt by a factor not seen since LBJ.

Why is that assclown Speaker?

Just shows more work to do in 2012. More RINOS and DEMOS to defeat. Rinse, repeat. Could take three good elections to fix the senate, due to the staggered election for that nest of toxic waste.

An analysis of all the votes on the ongoing budget process votes should be a perfect “census” of targets for the 2012 election.

I am 57 years old. I've been a politics/news junkie since before I graduated high school in '76.

I've NEVER seen it be "more"

Besides, I think all of this talk about cutting budget is nothing but a lot of hooey. What the govt giveth with one hand, it taketh back with the other.

These aren't even cuts. They're "almost" reductions. But even it it were, whats ultimately going to happen? It's going to disappear back into Treasury's maw and just be regurgitated somewhere else.

At a penny on the dollar. I don't believe that EITHER party has ANY intention of cutting anything, EVER.

Yeah, I heard that 10 years ago...

And 15 years ago the GOP lost the PR battle bigtime when Gingrich and Clinton went toe-to-toe. We need to win in the court of public opinion if we are to win more seats a year from now.

No, for the past 15 years, we haven't control anything. The government grows and controls all Carolyn...

They just give the perception that one party or the other is winning or is somehow in control. It's all to appease...Window dressing.

This is just the first step in a long battle.

Come on Carolyn...It's a sham...We hear that same thing from these two beltway parties ever few years...Over and over.

Yeah, the PR is gonna be real impressive when our entire economy and way of life comes crashing down because we can't afford spit anymore.

And the Reps will be able to stand in front of the presser and say, " Sorry folks, we're broke. But we did manage to save a penny on the dollar one year!!"

That'll win us a lot in the court of public opinion. Sure

You think they would have pushed this if not for the Tea Party — no — but he did better than I expected he would and it is only the first battle in a long war.

More Democrats voted against it than Republicans. 28 Republicans voted against it. Is that our ‘tea party constituency’? We’re screwed.

"They’re not stronger...they’re much weaker than they were before November 2010. They lost the majority in the House and they’ll lose the majority in the Senate in 2012. The Left has a lot of nerve but tends to be undisciplined and shortsighted in the way it fights politically." ~March 2, 2011

first battle in a long war.

Sorry. America hasn't got the luxury of fighting a long war over cutting 1.5 tillion dollars from it's budget.

We've got another 1.5 trillion dollar deficit this year. Over 10 years that's going to add up to 25-35 trillion more dollars by the time the interest on the debt is taken into account.

We're supposed to raise the debt ceiling for those kinds of numbers every year?

We'll be broke in 10 more years at this rate.

The GOP had better get ready for a new Party-the TeaParty.
