Yes, and most of the 2011 money they were talking about was already spent. What I think went missing from this debate was how come no one said what this really was about?
In my opinion, they were negotiating how much of the unspent stimulus to give back. Notice how it wasn’t mentioned anywhere by anyone? They are all in this together.
That’s politics.
Amen
Your observation is correct. No one was expecting him to act for the Senate or the Executive Branch. The point is, Tea Party coservatives and pubbies own the House. He could and should have done better.
When you look back on the shutdown charade it appears to me Boehner was determined to give the demrats the best deal he could short of being run out of town on a rail by conservatives.
Note to Boehner: You failed miserably. Go away. You just frittered away 4 months and America is no better for it.
The key is whether this is the first right turn of a new fiscal ratchet that had been basically left turning for 50 years or so. Will there be another debt ceiling right turn next month, and then the 2012 budget, then the election...
“Note to Boehner: You failed miserably. Go away. You just frittered away 4 months and America is no better for it.”
IMO the three budget issues needed to be dealt with on a cutting strategy that demanded a sequence of big, bigger and biggest spending reductions. Instead, thinking small predictably produced small results.
No...the GOP is just plain weak when it comes to the news media...so afraid someone's going to call them bad names. I wouldn't put it past them to try to nominate some fool like Orin Hatch. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
I too have run and won. I currently hold a seat and it is a rigged game, particularly against the challenger, but you can blame the voter for that as well.
My point is that running and ruling are two different things. In Cook County, IL, which seems to be the dark heart of 'liberalism', it is very difficult for a conservative to move an agenda forward. Yet, I've done it over a long time period and through compromise. I couldn't get all I wanted all at once. Is Illinois as I would like it to be? Not nearly at all, but it is much, much better.
Further, I know the difference between a cup of tea with a teaspoon of feces and a cup of feces with a teaspoon of tea.
I don't follow this analogy.
We want feces free tea and yet people like you tell us we must "compromise".
The nature of American government is compromise. Our country wouldn't exist without it. It is a foundational premise. See the 3/5ths Compromise as an example.
Eff you and the lame horse you rode in on.
Uncalled for and extremely immature. While I appreciate your commitment to better government, you must restrain your emotionalism if you want to discuss your views with me. We're on the same side and want the same things. Civil discussion is the mark of conservatism.
Do you think so? Because, you know... Your opinion means so much to me.
Or not.
Go compromise. Accept a little Evil in the spirit of "getting along" and "getting things done". Things you shouldn't be doing period, but what the heck... We gotta compromise, right?
People like you are EXACTLY how we ended up in this situation. "Half a loaf is better than no bread" only extends as far as things government SHOULD be doing. This is more long the lines of "intolerable acts"...
OK, lay out your agenda, just your top 3 goals for the current legislative session.
Then show me how you corral 60 votes in the Democratically controlled Senate to override an Obama veto?
1. Cut the budget.
2. Reign in or defund any regualtory agency that has no basis in Art 1 Sec 8.
3. Cut taxes. Flat or FAIR Tax.
If none of the above are possible... Shut it all down. Until 2012 if necessary.
WE draw the line and let THEM compromise with US. It never works out well for us if we reverse that ever so simple calculus.
Who lost the Shutdown Showdown?
Taxpayers.
It wasn’t even close.
1. Cut the budget. (We did)
2. Reign in or defund any regualtory agency that has no basis in Art 1 Sec 8. (Not enough votes...yet)
3. Cut taxes. Flat or FAIR Tax. (Not enough votes...yet, but at least cutting is possible)
If none of the above are possible... Shut it all down. Until 2012 if necessary. (OK, so we cut the budget and that puts us in the right with your plan. Hold on and let us continue to work our magic and win future elections hopefully capturing the Senate and/or the Presidency)
(My point is we won and we will continue to win with your support!)
2. So don't fund the ones that don't pass muster. 3. So stop spending more than you take in with what you have.
You are making excuses for inaction. Nothing is possible if you don't have the will to stand firm on your principles.
