I like to fiddle with numbers.

So here goes... Let's say the price of gas is $4.00 now - if each 10 cents increase reduces the number of highway deaths by 2.3% here is what we can conclude.

100% divided by 2.3 equals approximately 43.5, which means that if gas were increased by 43.5 times 10 cents, that would be a price increase of $4.35 per gallon.

So the bottom line is if gasoline goes from $4 to $8.35 per gallon...there would be no, zip, none, zero, nada highway deaths.

Wouldn't that be great?!?!

So we should put up billboards reading $8.35/gallon gas eliminates all highway deaths, according to CNN.

Of course, I suppose someone might get on the highway all by himself and try to get to 200 MPH and ruin the perfect number.

If that’s the case, I’ll go back to driving drunk once gas hits $8.35, as I won’t be putting anyone’s life in danger.

It’s true ... if we can get unemployment and gas prices up enough, we can cut highway deaths to levels not seen since the early 1920’s ...

Regardless of the utter nonsense of the calculation...

I ask one question that exposes the utter calumny and duplicity of the lamestream media:

WOULD THIS BE ON CNN IF BUSH WERE PRESIDENT?

I guess this means that if we make the price of gasoline high enough (e.g. $1000/gal ), the death rate in the highway will be zero.

If we want to save lives, why not totally ban driving?? :)

Since I started driving when gas was $0.25/gallon, traffic deaths must be down 81.65% !!!!

The more accurate statement would be that for every 10 cent increase in the price of gas, an additional 2.3% of the population is unable to afford to get where they are going. Eventually we will all be prisoners in our own homes waiting for Obama to allow drilling.

Another story in the news is that on-land oil drilling leaks are polluting the country. They will try to shut that down too.

If gas goes to $7.50, then there will be no road fatalities. This will bury the funeral parlor industry.

Every time the price goes up 10 cents, the size of the 2.3% is smaller. So actually if the rule of a 2.3% drop in deaths for every 10 cents increase held all the way until the price was $8.35, there would be 0.977 ^ 43.5 = 36% as many highway deaths.

OF course- with prices going up this much - more people will be committing suicide because of going bankrupt/losing jobs/losing homes/etc. than highway deaths “prevented”.

Extrapolating, if it goes above $8.35 we should see the creation of new lives.

Then the N.O.W. will organize a protest against gas prices in DC.
