I think that something needs to have a small surface area too.... A small hammer vs. something like a brick that will just go thunk thunk thunk. If I remember right.

It should be noted that they tried several things to break the window and the only thing that worked was the emergency window breaking tool.

I think I was there too. It's not far from West Point, is it? Nice waterfront area, but small. Most of the town looked like it was probably a nice blue collar area, 60+ years ago before the libs unleashed their failed social policies.

Now, wait a minute. I heard on the news this a.m., AND read somewhere, that she let the 10-year old out before she drove into the water. Now, they’re say, he was in the van with her, and escaped out a window? What is going on?? Why such different versions?

Was that after it was totally submerged or at anytime while it was sinking?

It should be noted that they tried several things to break the window and the only thing that worked was the emergency window breaking tool.

The tool you show is a combination window breaking hammer and seat belt cutter. The hammer doesn't work if the interior is filled with enough water that you can't get a good swing.

You can also use a spring loaded center punch tool, and it works every time, even submerged.

OK, I found out where I read that - it was an AP article posted on The Blaze:

"NEWBURGH, N.Y. (AP) — A woman who had just been involved in a domestic dispute loaded her four children into a minivan Tuesday night before letting one out and driving the rest of them into the Hudson River, firefighters said. The woman and three young children were killed.

The 10-year-old boy who had been let out of the minivan ran to a nearby fire station and alerted firefighters, Chief Michael Vatter said. The boy told firefighters his mother had driven off a boat ramp in Newburgh, about 60 miles north of New York City, and into the murky water of the river, Vatter said. Inside with her were the boy’s siblings: two boys, ages 5 and 2, and an 11-month-old girl.

Wait... how could she be 25 if her oldest son is 10? Don’t you have to be 16 to get married in New York?

I don’t envy her husband, having to try to comfort and raise this kid under such circumstances. Hopefully, his employer will give him some flex time.

Sure....the pressure builds from the air trying to escape and the water coming in....once everything is where it wants to go (air out, water in) then there is no more pressure keeping the door closed and it will open (provided it isn't locked).

They actually sell spring loaded hammers for this purpose, I don’t have one because there is no water around here.

If the husband is the father of the first child he could have married when she came of legal age.

However I'm betting he wasn't the birth father.

If you get a window open and cannot get out before the water rushing in pushes you back into the car you’ll want to climb into the back seat and be prepared to get your last gasp of air from the the space above the rear window because it can be a long way to the surface.

“it can be a long way to the surface.”

Not really. Air expands in your lungs as you surface and, try this, take a deep breath and walk heel-to-toe the distance the water is deep and you’ll find you can make it just fine.

You all are aware that you don’t have to be married to have a baby right? She could have had a child at 15, not unusual at all.

Lashanda Armstrong

The distraught driver was identified as Lashanda Armstrong, 25. The landlord at her building said Armstrong shared the apartment with her boyfriend, and had twice asked to get the locks changed in a six-month period - most recently in March.

"She said she didn't want him here," John Boubaris, 48, said. "That was the last person living with her, the boyfriend."

Neighbors identified the boyfriend as Jean Pierre, the father of the three dead children.

I think you’re right about the spring loaded punch! It was an interesting show and a little sobering.
