The GOP Establishment's Futile Battle Against Donald Trump
The New Republic ^ | 04/20/2011 | Ed Kilgore

During the 2008 election cycle, Mitt Romney was often accused of treating politics more like a consumer-focused business than an exercise in leadership. “My view is, we ought to double Guantanamo,” he said, radiating the sense that if primary voters wanted something, anything, he’d be willing to sell it. His strategists obsessed about creating and selling “Brand Romney.” To many, these efforts made him look like a crass twit, a market researcher’s caricature of the perfect Republican candidate, even as he came in second-place for the GOP nomination. This election, however, Romney may have to compete with Donald Trump.

Uh, no, your Reagan/Trump comparison was completely idiotic no matter what your motives were.

Reagan certainly was a bridge builder. But those times were far different than they are today. In the “American Idol/Face Book” generation, it takes a completely different approach.

Trump has discovered the right combination of tactics that works today. Reagan would never have considered the approach that Trump is taking. And Trump does not even come close to the man that Reagan was. It’s too bad. we desperately need someone like him again, and very soon.

All I’ve seen for the last three weeks is ignorance, postulating and pigheaded remarks in defense of Trump.

If people ignore Trump’s liberal past, if they give credence to his lies and distortions, and if they tie him in anyway to conservatism, they’re not only far out on a limb, they’re out of touch with political reality.

If anything, Trump is severely damaging the conservative brand for 2012.

Try not to be so thin skinned. You have encountered the “Straight shooters” on this forum. And heavily “fortified” too I might add. But they talk the truth and I enjoy their input.

>>>>>I’d rather spend time with people building bridges....

If you wanted to build bridges you wouldn't be running around FR calling Trump's bloviating, conservative ideas.

Anyone who comes on FR and pushes the likes of Giuliani, Romney and Trump for potus is not a conservative and will be challenged.

Agree 100% with your assessment. Reagan truly was a bridge builder. Trump literally is a building builder, and a reality show host. Hell, I have no leanings toward him at all. Where are the Ronald Reagan’s in today’s world? Our problem is we have several potential strong conservatives with too little experience (Chris Christie, Mark Wallace, etc). I agree, someone, somehow must rise to the top soon. There is to much in-fighting going on in the conservative movement now so we need a uniter.

C’mon R Man, you know me better than that. You know I come across as pragmatic, but not easy. I know it sounds like I am defending Trump, but I am more in line with amazement and curiosity at just what Trump is doing that is making such a serious impact.

He has frequently planted both feet in his mouth over the years and nobody is denying that fact.

GOP or DNC both are only good inside the beltway.

Trump understands that voters do not live inside the beltway.

That’s true, especially the fact that Trump has discovered a Populist approach is how to get through to the electorate.

This is not something we expected or thought would work well in the past.

Personally, I think it will take a strong woman to defeminize the country. I like Sarah Palin a lot, but am not sure she is even running anymore. Michelle Bachmann found $105 billion to implement ObamaCare which nobody else even is talking about. Those are the size of cuts we need to make and the lady from Minnesota represents the type of courage we need. Herman Cain is another one whom I could enthusiastically support. He's a good businessman like Mitt and DT, but he's also has a long track record of adherence to conservative positions, something neither Donald or Mitt can claim.

There are probably others, but these three stand out. Of the white men, Jim DeMint is my favorite, but he's already declared he isn't interested.

Well, at least you admit it. Most won't.

Look, I don't know ANY FReepers who want to to see Obama reelected. But its not gonna be easy, my FRiend. Trump is a very polarizing figure for conservatives, Republicans and Independents alike. Some folks give Trump kudos for his attacks on Obama. Fine. Some see Trump as presidential material. Some of us see him for the phony and fraud he is --- a charlatan of the first order. Makes Romney look timid in that regard. LOL

If Trump runs and he somehow wins the nomination, Obama will be reelected. Maybe by the level Johnson beat Goldwater in 1964. No doubt about it. For that reason alone, Trump must be rejected and the earlier the better. There is no other choice.

. . . candidates like Bachmann, Palin, Cain, can campaign leaving the idiot MSM out of the loop.

This is exactly what needs to happen to break the yoke of the enemedia. They not only have to make them irrelevant with their campaigns, but they have to make them irrelevant with wins. Rand Paul did it even though his Daddy is a moonbat. Michelle Bachmann did it despite an uphill climb.

Obozo is merely a symptom of a larger problem. Yes, he's a horrible president. But the only reason his approval ratings are not into the low 20's now is because the enemedia is covering for him. Break the credibility of the MSM and you break their ability to select candidates.

If we fail to do so, we are stuck with alternating between awful leadership like ObaMao and merely mediocre leadership like Bush, Trump, Romney and Huck.

We both see eye to eye on most all issues. Trump is NOT Presidential material and you have him accurately pegged as a charlatan.

I try to come across somewhat positive and non offensive (not always, but I try LOL!@) And I really do not think Trump will actually go through with it, but if he does, he will not get past the primaries. But my belief is, he may join the race for a while, to take out Romney and the Huckster, so we can have a real Conservative win the ticket. Just a thought......

We shall see.

One thing is certain. This farcical embrace and infatuation with Trump has got to stop.
