Publix may change its coupon policy
Tampa Tribune ^ | April 27, 2011 | RICHARD MULLINS

TAMPA --Attention Publix coupon fanatics. There could be big changes in your shopping world soon.

Publix officials confirm they're now considering a major shift in how the Lakeland-based grocery giant handles coupons, just as extreme couponing becomes a national trend.

Publix spokeswoman Shannon Patten declined to offer many details on the change since the company has not yet decided on a final policy nor trained individual store managers.

Publix has had a relatively lenient coupon policy, instructing cashiers to honor coupons from a range of competitors.

As The Coupon Whisperer, I confess to having something of an anxiety attack when I first heard about changes to the Publix coupon policy. But now that I see the changes have to do with accepting competitor's coupons I feel a lot better. I never did rely much on using competitor's coupons at Publix. The Coupon Whisperer has many other methods of getting FREE/Cheap stuff at Publix. In fact later today, I plan to go to that store and stock up on freebies.

Let's see...FREE lox would go nice with FREE bagels for breakfast tomorrow.

Obviously, all this attention on extreme couponing is going to cause the coupon issuers to revise their couponing business models. You can’t stay in business when all of your customers finally figure out how to buy $600 of food for only $6.00.

What’s going to happen is that in the REAL WORLD wannabee extreme couponers will quickly find out that they won’t be allowed to show up at the checkout counter with 3 shopping carts and a stack of coupons. Off-camera the store places limits on that. And that is why The Coupon Whisperer stays under the radar by only purchasing a few items at a time.

A friend of mine is an extreme coupon queen. She complains/brags about how she gets $100 worth of groceries for free, but the Store manager refuses to give her the 18 cents due her at checkout. She even brings her own...brown paper bags!

To me, it’s just annoying. She’s a tightwad and it has been embarrassing and annoying on occasion.

You are dead on. Once I saw that they were showing a TV program of people blatantly coupon shopping, buying 6 cart loads for a nickle, you knew they were going to crack down. This is what happens when these programs come out. The people in them are all excited to be on TV, but once the cat is out of the bag, it isn’t a secret anymore and the fun ends.

I know a guy who did the storage locker auctions for years because he runs a second hand shop. Once the TV show about it came on he stopped doing it because everybody was bidding outrageous money for junk. The nooby frenzy ruined it for all the real guys trying to make a living.

Yeah! "Extreme couponing". It's a dangerous sport.

I had a friend who was REALLY good at it and was thinking about turning Pro; maybe even competing in the 2012 'C' Games in Boston. He recently retired, though, after shattering his index finger when it slipped off the left mouse button during an attempt at a 'Triple Copied, Double-Sided Print-Out' on an expired 25 cent ravioli coupon.

The finger healed okay, and he entered a couple of local amateur events over the winter, but he said his heart wasn't in it any more. I think maybe he just lost his nerve. But, you know, after an injury like that I think ANYONE might second-guess their couponing abilities.

Kroger uses a Customer Card as a means of holding “sales.” I used to average 15% - 23% savings. Now I am lucky to achieve 10% and my buying habits have not changed.

Kind of stupid. I always make sure to pay something plus if the amount is small I don't argue the change since I already got my good deals. I just want to split and go to my next deal. However, I did have this incident happen to me:

I picked up a whole bunch of chicken wings, a Porterhouse steak, and a six pack of beer. I used my coupons and when I whipped out some money, the cashier said I didn't owe anything. Okay, so it was exactly zero, or so I thought, as I began to leave.

Then behind me I heard the cashier call out:

"Sir, please come back."

"Uh-oh!" I thought. This can't be good.

When I returned, the cashier said, "Your forgot to get your money." And she gave me $2.05.

So I got all that stuff FREE plus $2.05. I usually try to owe something but my miscalculation caused them to give me money back.

And how would you like to be paid to "buy" all that stuff?

Free is good, but all things in moderation.
I was watching some "super-couponer" on TV the other night and she had built shelving in every room in her house to store her freebies.
It was obvious this woman was a hoarder who made her entire family pay for her mental disease, while she paid nothing.

Right now I am going NUts because I have a bunch of valuable coupons arriving in the mail. As is typical, the mail seems to always be LATE when I am due to get coupons yet the mail arrives in the morning when there isn’t anything I really need. It’s a plot, I tell ya!

I do what I call reasonable couponing. Above is a pic of my current Ken's Marinade stockpile. 51 bottles. Since I use about 2 bottles per week, this should last me about 6 months but I expect another sale before then. This stockpile cost me ZERO. A BOGO sale combined with coupons and MMs.

I watched the show last night (Extreme Couponers). The lady bought 43 packages of cream cheese because she got them free. What does one do with that much cream cheese? It has to be refrigerated and has a short expiration date. Doesn’t that border on hoarding.

"Extreme Couponing" has already started to become boring since it has fallen into a certain pattern. Couponer enters store with a stack of coupons and is worried if she can get the price down. Guess what? They ALWAYS do. ....Yawn!

Well if you are only 1/2 mile away just think of it as they paid for your gas to get there. ;) Some it the stores here have made it so they only accept one of each coupon so if you want to buy with more than one you have to amke it separate orders.

Or both or neither. That is like saying you can only like burritos if you're Mexican.
