London is no longer an English city, says John Cleese. Is he right?
The Telegraph ^ | April 18th, 2011 | Ed West

Posted on 04/29/2011 7:35:54 AM PDT by Eurotwit

He said: “There were disadvantages to the old culture, it was a bit stuffy and it was more sexist and more racist. But it was an educated and middle-class culture. Now it’s a yob culture. The values are so strange.”

He added that he preferred living in Bath to London because the capital no longer felt “English”.

“London is no longer an English city which is why I love Bath,” he said. “That’s how they sold it for the Olympics, not as the capital of England but as the cosmopolitan city. I love being down in Bath because it feels like the England that I grew up in.”

Most of the people described as “Californians” are not. The problem is not Californian’s, but all the people who moved here from other states and other countries and ruined it for the rest of us and who have slimed us all as loonies. I assert that these transplants were loonies before they showed up here and all it has done is attract more loonies. If you can actually find a born and bred 2nd or 3rd generation Californian you would probably be surprised at how sane and conservative we really are.

The UK has its problems, but there is a lot to like there, including the friendly people. I hope I’ll have a chance to return someday soon.

I’ve heard people in New Orleans say something similar; that the negatives you see in the media are people with Mississippi roots.

He’s got a good case of Palin derangement going on too.

Michael Palin or Sarah Palin? (I wonder if he could be related to Todd if you go far enough back)

And, as Cleese says if you go to places like Bath is more like “the England he grew up in”. I was on the Yorkshire coast last summer. It was excellent. The largest problem was not muslims. The only ones I ever saw was 40 or so men in saudi beach robes perving on women on the beach.

Your Yorkshire trip obviously missed the city of Bradford. A lot of the older mill towns are certainly not "English' by the Cleese method.

When I visited England over 30 years ago, people were already telling me that London was no longer English. It has grown worse since.

I am afraid that John Cleese is typical. There are many American liberals who are similar: they profess to admire multiculturalism, but really enjoy more traditional settings: they strive to connect with the culture they themselves have undermined.

The poet Roy Campbell noted the same phenomenon in his Autobiography “Light on a Dark Horse.” He said that travelers profess to admire the landscapes, but what they really long for is the lives of the simpler people they see in trips to rural areas, or more old-fashioned parts of the world.

In moving to those places, they buy up the nice, old houses, and may even contribute to retoration activities — but they do not actually attend the old, traditional churches, and they import their stinking, liberal politics, until pretty soon the whole place is not the same. This is happening to NH because of all the rich Massachusetts newcomers. Much of NJ has been ruined by New Yorkers.

“I love being down in bath.” Take a shower, for goodness sakes. You’ll drown if you stay down in the bath. Another soap-dropping, tea-drinking drive on the wrong side of the roader.

The largest problem was native British yob culture. People lying in the gutters puking a friday night when you are on the way to a theatre show.

The British native welfare class. Eliminating welfare would be the only solution, although an improvement over the current situation would be to scale back welfare benefits to the point where ANY job would be preferable to welfare, along with vigorous penalties for working "off the books" while collecting benefits.

Considering Cleese is a huge lefty, I find this a bit ironic.

“Lefty-flight”. Charming.

A bit past their prime...:^) ...but Whitby is nice - and Scarborough is one of the spots my ancestors are from - Scalby Mill....:^)

I hope you got to York on your trip.

The idea that it is only the ‘underclass’ that engage in this behaviour is highly erroneous. Watch any rugby team in action on a saturday night, and you’ll see what I mean.

agree with him, it’s become a third world cess pit in many parts of it which is a shame as the history and buildings are great.
Est London a complete dosshole taken over by pakistani muslims who seem intent on building a mosque on every corner

he fled to Bath after he supported the crap which ruined London much like the muppets who move south to FL, VA, NC, SC, or east from CA, OR, WA after they have ruined their liberal cess pits up north and the west coast.
They then look to move to their new states but never changing their liberal views thus making their new state look like their old crap hole.

Course they move on again after they have ruined their new state leaving us here to look at the damage they have done, and they wonder why many of us here hate them with a passion
