I think Obama had it right the first time: Trump is a carnival barker. People know that in the end he's not a serious candidate; he's just stirring the pot and engaging in his usual self-promotion. That's why a President of the United States -- any President of the United States -- should ignore him. To even tell jokes about Trump demeans the office of the presidency and amounts to the very ugly and very scary sight of a powerful government official attacking what amounts to a private citizen. Yeah, Trump asked for it, and Trump certainly qualifies as a "public figure," but that doesn't mean that a President should be seen getting down in the mud with him. I don't care what the press tries to do with these "highlights." The more these events and their meaning sink in, the worse for Obama. |
