(Reuters) - U.S. special forces set out to kill Osama bin Laden and dump his body in the sea to make it harder for the al Qaeda founder to become a martyr, U.S. national security officials told Reuters on Monday.
"This was a kill operation," one of the officials said.
"If he had waved a white flag of surrender, he would have been taken alive," the official added. But the operating assumption among the U.S. raiders was that bin Laden would put up a fight -- which he did.
Bin Laden "participated" in a firefight between the U.S. commandos and residents of the fortified compound near the Pakistani capital Islamabad where he had been hiding, the official said.
The official would not explicitly say whether bin Laden fired on the Americans, but confirmed that during the course of the 40-minute operation the U.S. team shot bin Laden in the head.
Three other men and a woman lay dead after the raid, but no Americans were killed. John Brennan, President Barack Obama's top counterterrorism adviser, said U.S. officials believed the woman was one of bin Laden's wives and that he had used her as a human shield.
Brennan said the commandos were prepared to capture Obama alive, but they knew that was a remote possibility.
"If we had the opportunity to take bin Laden alive, if he didn't present any threat, the individuals involved were able and prepared to do that," Brennan told reporters.

I just heard on Howie Carr's show that a total of 22 people died in the raid. This makes sense when you figure that there must have been security and staff there.
I hope they chummed the water as they tossed him into the sea. I’ll bet that becoming shark food isn’t ‘clean’.
Considering he was shot twice in the head, they’d pretty much have to say he put up a fight- whether he did or not.
Now every time I go boating or to the beach, I can pee on his grave.
Osama’s ragheads in a fire fight with Seal Team Six? Yeah right. Go ahead, make my day. Everyone of those seals are highly trained marksmen. I pity anyone that thinks they can come out alive going up against those guys!
What annoys me is HOW quickly president Zilch got all those college kids to celebrate in front of the WH around 11 o’clock before the announcement of OBL last night. PURE STAGED. I’m dying to find out WHO coordinated the bus trip from the campus to the WH lawn. SOMETHING stinks to high heaven. Float a hundred dollar bill around the campus and watch the children sing like canaries. It was preplanned...mark it!!
Not too quick - I’ve heard reports that many were college kids, on the GI Bill. Their actions don’t look like Obama supporters:
- They were yelling “USA ... USA ... USA”. Obama supporters would have been yelling “O ... BA ... MA”.
- Obama supporters would have burned some cars and smashed some windows.
- They were smiling - Obama supporters can’t be happy that we used violence on a friendly terrorist.
That’s not what I heard, they were screaming O B A M A and USA, plus 4 more years or something like that...don’t know if it’s on Youtube.
LOL! As of this posting, it still says “Obama”.

Yet more verification [of a drash concerning sin-laden Obama]. Someone needs to make a list of all these media “slips”.
