In the short term, it's hands off the president," says an adviser to a Republican presidential candidate, discussing the political atmosphere after the U.S. killing of Osama bin Laden. "The country is feeling good about itself, really for the first time in years, and the president is the embodiment of that. Nobody wants to be the person who pops that balloon." Talks with aides and associates of several leading Republican candidates suggest they all believe the same thing: This is a time to step out of the way and let Barack Obama take credit for killing bin Laden. The advisers expect the president's poll numbers to rise. And then they expect those numbers to go back down, and the campaign to return to economic issues.
"There won't be long-term effects," says a member of another candidate's circle. "In the end, Obama will get a short-term bump in the polls. This election is about jobs, houses, and cars -- my job, my house, and gas for my car. In the end ... it's about the economy."
Republicans throughout campaign-land are looking back hopefully toward 1991, when President George H.W. Bush was riding high after victory in the first Gulf War -- only to be defeated by Bill Clinton in the 1992 election. "Remember in the Gulf War when Bush was at 90 percent approval rating?" asks an adviser to a third candidate. "That tanked."
"Historically, these things have sort of a short shelf life," says an adviser to a fourth candidate. "This is not a day to distinguish between our policies and the president's. There will be other days to do that."

There is to be a G.O.P. Presidential debate in a couple of days. Two questions leap to mind the first of which is who will be there and the second of which is how many questions will they be asked about the death of Osama vs economic issues.
Hopefully Dick Cheney will step into the ring.
Back to reality - Thank you and God bless our military!
Chicken sh** Republicans.
Someone should ask about the burial ceremony and who’s idea that was. Everyone I know is mad about that.
They never want to pop any balloons at any time. So how long do we have to tip-toe around Obama? Is this the John McCain style to political warfare? Oh that Obama--he's a fine president!
As president, what would you have done with the body?
I would of brought that body to New York Ground Zero and let the FDNY deal with it.
Oh good grief...Get out there and fight you cowards! How ‘bout congratulate Obama for approving the strike but point out he and other libs we against “enhanced interrogation” as well as Gitmo.
Say what you want about Trump, at least he’s not afaid to fight...
Please tell me they are not saying they will remain silent on raising the debt ceiling and high gas prices/no jobs? Obama will milk OBL for a year if the idiots let him.
Are they idiots?
The GOP have become democrat crybabies. I pray the idiots ask and fund West to run in 2012 or we are doomed.
When gas goes over $5 a gallon people in this country won’t give a tinker’s damn about who killed OBL.
Exactly and the GOP will pump up and fund Romney and they will lose period. Then the tea party will show them WE THE PEOPLE HAVE HAD IT!
Cheney will never pass the physical with that bad ticker of his. If he is accepted, be better have a damn strong running mate, because he won’t survive his first term.
Really? As president of the United States, that is what you would have done? And after the FDNY guys finished with it (what do you think they would do), what would you do with the body? I think you know that isn’t how we operate, as much as many of us would like to see it. I would have liked to have it tied behind a fire truck and driven through the streets of Manhattan, but I know that isn’t realistic. I think, all things considered, they did the right thing. We are a civilized nation.
Heard him talk lately? It's a strain for him. He has a bad ticker that's getting worse all the time.
So Obama stumbled and did (sic) something right. Actually he was riding on the boots of our brave Seals. Nothing has changed: we’re still paying $5 a gal. for gas,he refuses to let the nation drill for oil or gas, he wants complete amnesty for illegals, he’s plunged the country into near bankruptcy with his multi trillion deficits, his re-distribution of wealth is nothing more than socialism, his appointment of czars to oversee every aspect of the nation’s working is communist, his continued appointment of lib/commie judges does nothing more than to continue abortion, gay marriage and to move his commie philosphy forward, etc. And the bottom line “are you better off now than four years ago?” The Pubbie nominee whoever he or she is has an excellent change of removing the imposter from office.
