Thousands have joined a campaign to "bump" Donald Trump as this year's Indy 500 pace car driver in part because of his comments about President Obama's birth certificate.
For some it probably seemed like a perfect fit. A man known for creating a spectacle kicking off the greatest spectacle in racing.
"As soon as they announced him I was uncomfortable. That just didn't feel right," Michael Wallack said.
Wallack said he is an Indy 500 fan to his core. He said he was initially just disappointed that Trump would be driving the pace car. Then The Donald joined the chorus of people claiming President Obama wasn't born in the U.S. and that's when Wallack says inspired the new movement.
"To me when he really started into the birtherism that's what got me to go ahead and start the page," Wallack said.
The page titled "We Don't Want Donald Trump to Drive the Indy 500 Pace Car" hit Facebook on April 8. As of last Wednesday night, the group only had 38 members. That same evening, two people mentioned it on twitter.
"From 38 at say 6 p.m. on Wednesday until I finally went to bed Wednesday night it had jumped to 300 and some," Wallack said.
By Friday, there were 1,100 members.By Tuesday afternoon, more than 5,500 and growing.
"It's almost become a community. It's not just people hitting the like button and going away," Wallack said.
Many people share why they don't want Trump behind the wheel, and they've started to take action contacting race sponsors like IZOD and Chevrolet. Motor Speedway officials said they're listening and taking every concern into consideration.
"We're going to continue to monitor the situation and then make a decision if there's a decision to be made at a later time," Speedway spokesperson Doug Boles said.
Wallack and his followers said they hope for change, but if not they have a plan for race day.
"In racing when a driver shouldn't be on the track we waive a black flag, so the thought has come along, well, if Donald Trump comes by in a pace car how many black flags can be waving?"

Not near enough support. There are over 300 million Facebook users Worldwide. 100 million in America alone and they can only get 5500.....lol. Now that is a loser approach for sure. I am not crazy about Trump being President but I don’t see why he has to be vilified for doing something he thought was right.
I just did a search on my Facebook page and they have 10,348 right now.....LOL. This will not get traction at all.
Hmmmm - kinda surprised there are that many Indy fans who love Obama.
This is one Texan that could not care less about Indy and I figure most people watching that even are so buzzed they don’t know what the hell is going on anyhow.
Give them all a couple of free cases of Bud Light and a sleeve of Skoal or Copenhagen and they will change their minds......
probably more likely that it’s mostly people who don’t actually watch the indy, but are joining the chorus because they don’t like trump.
Just heard on local news that Trump is still on and will not be replaced.
The race fans don’t care. Facebook lefties have no control over it. Most fans are not far left loons, well, maybe a few are.
So no loss to any race sponsors anyway.

Indy shouldn’t give him the ride or any other person who is considered a possible presidential candidate in my opinion, or anyone heavily involved in politics for that matter. I wouldn’t want them to have Obama or Pelosi there or Olberman. It’s an endorsement. Just my opinion.
Good to hear......To hell with those pu$$ies.
Hmmm indeed was my reaction when I read the “cleverly” wedged-in line: “Wallack and his followers said they hope for change,...” Just keeping the hope/change words as an inseparable brain fart alive.
Like appearing on Oprah, Letterman, or the view.
the irony here...a quintessential New Yorker bumped from a Yankee race
But if he was in Charlotte or Talladega he’d be cheered
sometimes it’s just too absurd
Did you hear about the guy who paid $225K (!!) for one of the Camaro Indy Pace Cars (sticker = $47K) at the Barrett-Jackson auction earlier this year? IMO, they should let him pace the entire race. He certainly paid for the privilege.
folks who hate Trump probably hate gas guzzling race cars too
..besides freepers who hate Trump
Real men watch NASCAR.
Heard they are getting an equal amount that want Trump to stay.
Trump is a good fit , he will have fun with it and not hurt anything.
I've been to 30 Indy's, I can't go this year, since we moved out west, it seems to get harder to make it.
