Julia Roberts, Hillary Clinton: World needs clean stoves
By ALEX GUILLÉN

Julia Roberts and Hillary Clinton say providing cleaner burning stoves to developing countries could save lives and help the climate.

“The impact goes beyond people's health,” the “Erin Brockovich” star and the secretary of state wrote in a USA Today op-ed published Friday. “Burning these fuels produces carbon dioxide, methane and black carbon, which contribute to climate change. And cutting down trees for fuel causes natural habitats to dry up, forests to disappear and soil to erode.”

Millions of people die each year because of smoke from traditional cookstoves and open fires that rely on wood, dung or charcoal for fuel, according to the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves. Those numbers are tilted steeply toward women and children in developing nations, who inhale the dangerously high concentration of chemicals and can develop diseases including lung cancer and cataracts.

“All of this presents a major challenge — but it can be solved,” Roberts and Clinton wrote.

I had no idea they were talking about the United States. They are referring to the African and poor countries need this. I think this is pretty small in the big scheme of life. It isn’t like they want to give each household one of our great stoves.....don’t give them any ideas.

Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves

No doubt this NGO is running on grants from the private tax-exempt charitable foundations of major stockholders in oil and gas companies.

Returning to an intelligent state?
“...intelligent state?” As in state of being.

I thought that to return to an intelligent state you would have had to have at some point in the past been in an "intelligent state".

LOL!
Sometimes my brain could use a little intelligence. I thought you were editing, and I missed your point.

How about these underdeveloped countries letting people have access to coal-fired electricity and natural gas, so that they can have modern stoves? They don't quite describe how these alleged "clean" stoves work.

Every so often, some bleeding heart whizkid comes up with a new efficient oven for 3rd world people, and sets off on an adventure to get them to use it.

Like the "Tupperware Party" scene in Airplane!

Got any links about that Lorena Stove? I want one. I could cook lots of tortillas at once.

I am very interested in off grid cook stoves.

Reminds me of my Grandmother, second youngest of 20, born 1890. That woman could cook for an army, lead as first councilor her woman's group, raise four children and keep my Granddad in line.
