Despite hurdles to passage, Reid vows a vote on DREAM Act
The Hill ^ | May 11, 2011 | Mike Lillis

Posted on 05/11/2011 10:40:29 AM PDT by jazusamo

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Wednesday vowed to hold a vote on legislation creating a route to legal residency — and ultimately citizenship — for illegal-immigrant students.

Reid declined to say when the DREAM Act might reach the floor, but he nonetheless urged lawmakers to support the bill, if only for the economic benefits he said it would bring.

"Instead of kicking out of our country people who are educated," Reid said, "we should let them work."

Supporters of the DREAM Act have a long road ahead. Although the House passed the proposal in December, it fell five votes short of defeating a largely Republican filibuster in the Senate. Those hurdles are even higher in the 112th Congress, with Republicans controlling not only more seats in the upper chamber, but also the House gavel.

Reid said he is not discouraged and called on Republicans to rethink their opposition that sunk the legislation in December — particularly those who've supported similar legislation in the past.

"We ask the Republicans of good will to step forward and work with us on this," he said.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) suggested Wednesday there's a chance immigration reform could happen soon.

"I don't put it at a majority chance, but there's a chance. We're still talking — I'm talking to both business and labor about this bill," Schumer told Bloomberg. "I'm talking to my Republican colleagues, and I think the Republican Party realizes that the position of doing nothing on immigration doesn't help them. Furthermore, there's becoming an economic imperative.

"More and more people are realizing that our broken immigration system is an economic drag on the country, and I think there's a chance we could get a bill," Schumer said.

Daniel Strauss contributed.

Anything passed in the previous congress that has not become law is wiped away. They have to start all over with the seating of a new congress.

What? Most illegal immigrants can't even speak, read or write English!

They probably can't even read or write Spanish nor speak it properly.

Unemployment is at 9% (realistically more like 15%) and the RATS want to increase the flow of illegal aliens to get more RAT voters.

You are correct. It is a rare occurence when you find one with even a 6th grade education. Zero education is not uncommon. Third grade education is about the norm. sd

Twelve Americans are murdered every day by illegal aliens, according to statistics released by Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa. If those numbers are correct, it translates to 4,380 Americans murdered annually by illegal aliens. That's 21,900 since Sept. 11, 2001.

While King reports 12 Americans are murdered daily by illegal aliens, he says 13 are killed by drunk illegal alien drivers – for another annual death toll of 4,745. That's 23,725 since Sept. 11, 2001.

While no one – in or out of government – tracks all U.S. accidents caused by illegal aliens, the statistical and anecdotal evidence suggests many of last year's 42,636 road deaths involved illegal aliens.

King also reports eight American children are victims of sexual abuse by illegal aliens every day – a total of 2,920 annually.

Based on a one-year in-depth study, Deborah Schurman-Kauflin of the Violent Crimes Institute of Atlanta estimates there are about 240,000 illegal immigrant sex offenders in the United States who have had an average of four victims each. She analyzed 1,500 cases from January 1999 through April 2006 that included serial rapes, serial murders, sexual homicides and child molestation committed by illegal immigrants

“Instead of kicking out of our country people who are educated,” Reid said, “we should let them work.”

And how does this make sense Sr. Misfit? We have actual American citizens who are MUCH more educated who can’t find work. Part of the reason is the labor pool is too large. Go back to school and take a remedial economics class, or at the very least look up “supply and demand” on Wikipedia.

How many vertebrae had to be remove for Harry to be able to put his head up there that far?

Black unemployment is in the range of 50%.

Legal hispanics are not praying for millions more hispanics entering the work force by virtue of amnesty.

Despite the racist bigot leaders who are demanding amnesty everyday America citizens are not on board with this assault on our country.

I’m assuming you mean that their “first language” is not Spanish. You are correct. The education system in Mexico requires publically funded education for the first six years. After that, parents have to pony up tuition. I’ve encountered many illegals who sign their names with an “x.” With amnesty in place, this is what we’ll be faced with. Count on the general dole to explode to triple what it is now.,,sd

You and me and most Anglo people are not who Harry Reid is talking to with this BS
Ever watch the Hispanic news hour on cable TV? Immigration is always extensively covered there.
Hispanics will hear Harry Reid's absurd lies tonight and will be mightily impressed and more inclined to vote Obama in 2012
The Obama lies and Democrat lies about immigration will be on Hispanic news hours until the 2012 election
