President Obama urged businesses to "step up" and hire workers, pressing banks and other corporations to do more to help an economy that he said would take "several years" to recover fully.
In a town-hall style meeting conducted by CBS News on Wednesday, Obama said the weak housing market and high gasoline prices were the biggest "headwinds" dragging on the economy.
"We've got a lot more work to do to get businesses to invest and to hire," he told the audience in remarks broadcast on Thursday.
"It's going to take us several years for us to get back where we need to be."
The strength of the U.S. economy is likely to be the main factor that determines whether Obama will succeed in holding on to the White House next year.
He said businesses and banks that reaped the rewards of extraordinary measures to pull the country out of a deep recession had a responsibility now to invest hordes of cash into U.S. jobs.
"It is time for companies to step up," Obama said.
"American taxpayers contributed to that process of stabilizing the economy. Companies havebenefited from that, and they're making a lot of money, and now's the time for them to start betting on American workers and American products."

His proxies have been saying this since the obvious failure of his stimulus became apparent.
That would be the msm trumpeting Obama's endless superior qualities and casting an evil eye toward anyone who said otherwise and calling them racist.
I think we're passed that. Let him blame us. Look at the states that have increased their GOP leads in their legislatures or flipped their governing bodies to the GOP.
The voters are not fooled and they are not amused by the way the media has sold this man, how they have propped him up and how they have smeared his opposition.
The only people who are going to vote for Obama in 2012 are people who willingly would steal from their neighbors.
How far we have fallen in only twenty short years...G-d Bless, Mr. President. We really miss you..
Oh my! He fits the part.
Let’s give him the bird!
ObaMao’s lifetime total of private sector experience is what? Two months working at Baskin-Robbins as a teenager?
thank you for that moment of clarity...truly worth repeating...
muzzcomm strategy...both will work together to kill the common enemy known as FReedom...
I’d hire more people...but all of my money just went to pay taxes.

Undoubtedly, what SHOULD have been the most valuable, practical learning experience in his life.
Yes, I am most definitely including his Ivy League law degree.

If only he were President of China, he’d show ‘em what for, by God!
Delusions of a wannabe despot who thinks the U.S. has a command economy.
Good gosh. Talk about the “deer in the headlights” look. That idiot is lost in space.
Dictating to a company how to run their business is Fascism.
“Just because he is not smart, does not mean he should be underestimated. A very powerful cabal are controlling everything he says and does, but it is not without his tacit approval.”
They’ve overplayed their hand (impossible to put a fig leaf over the economic mess) and the media can no longer conceal the arrogance and mendaciousness and utter classlessness of the puppet and his entourage.
He’s just playing to the peanut gallery when he castigates business (or invites crime-loving rappers to the White Hut, or sniggers sophomorically about moats and alligators in front of a pre-selected cheering squad) in an effort to shore up his SHRINKING base.
