Members of Navy SEAL team 6, the Special Operations unit responsible for killing Al Qaeda leader Usama bin Laden in Pakistan last Sunday, have expressed concerns about their safety and the safety of their families now that details of the mission have been made public.

Speaking to Marines at Camp Lejeune Thursday, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the concerns were expressed to him directly a week ago when he met with members of the unit to congratulate them on their mission. Gates said the SEALs were mainly focused on their families and worried they could be subject to retaliatory attacks.

"If you're implying that those who share a rack are good guys"

I'm not implying or suggesting that at all.

I am stating clearly that you get to know them well enough to know who's good and bad.

Interesting.

Does this mean they remove the Trident badge from their uniform?

As big and fit as these guys are, they stand-out from the average Navy guy. Hard to hide a bull in a flock of sheep.

They do have families, which would be an easy target. Would like to be away and have some freak harassing your wife or kid? God knows there are a lot of them out there.

Have we not seen recently that it does not take a group of jihadi’s from the ME to wreck havoc....we have enough of our own homegrown wannabes.

What is so hard to understand here??? They are concerned for their FAMILIES!!!!!!!!!!!!

All it would take of for some Muslim Freak college kid who was born here and sits in a Mosque listening to HATE to think he was a hero and earning his terrorist street cred to take retribution on the wife or child of one of those SEALs. You know, grocery shopping, on the way home from school, at the park, doing errands, etc.....

Attorney General Eric Holder will want a special prosecutor to investigate the Seals. He’s already doing that with the CIA agents who interrogated captured terrorists. The interrogations led to the identity of Obama bin Laden’s courier.

I neither want to know their names or where they are based. That IS NOT my business. The command structure is not my business. It IS my business when I want to congratulate those that were involved in the raid. To those that went in and did the job, I want to say thank you for ridding the planet of one big cockroach. You, and others like you, will get the rest over time.

For the vice president to name names from this operation should be a treasonous offense. Just STFU about particulars. It’s none of our collective business who they are. Just thank them for the job they are doing and thank God we have people like them out there doing deeds that none of us would want to do. THEY are what Americans want to be proud of. A big thank you to the members of the United States military of all branches.

Just when you think you can’t be disgusted any further by this POS President I read this kind of stuff. He is just an absolute disaster for our country. Hurry up 2012!

“Is al-Qaeda or Pakistan really going to go to the effort of tracking down a SEALS, Delta, Marine Recon, Rangers’ family to make a point?”

There are plenty of targets in plain view - like the Pentagon.

Bad idea, Bin Laden.

Good post, Navy Vet.

The real question is, how much did the rest of the organization trust bin Laden at that time? I would say, not that much. Chances are, with his horrible health and all which he tried to cover up, at some point between 2001 and his death, they probably started sending him false information, because he had become a liability with his poor health, and easily also senility.

I feared this from the get-go. I feel the WH will release those names of these Seals before that photo of dead OBL. JUST DISGRACEFUL.

OBL’s son will file a wrongful death or denial of civil rights (excessive use of force, no warrant, improper extradition from foreign country, denial of life w/o due process of law, etc.) case against US Govt, the whole chain of command and John Doe Seal #1 through 25. The “discovery” will give his lawyer a copy of everything that happened including all documents, transmissions, etc., everything: names of seals and they will have to be deposed under oath as to exactly what they did. Lots of videos on those helmet cams. This will be a major fiasco. He can file the case in a U S Federal Court. Defending “us” will be Eric Holder. God help us all! He may even file it in The Hague, or even a Pakistani court.

They should never have released any info on these guys. Just letting the enemy know that 24 SEALS were involved gives guys like Khadaffi an idea of what to prepare for in the event of a strike. This administration has diarrhea of the mouth, and can’t keep their stories straight on top of it.

If Robert Gates had any honor, he would have resigned last Tuesday, then immediately held a press conference, and told the American public that he strongly opposed the administration's making operational details of the raid public. He would have had a much bigger audience, and what he said would have had far more impact. Frankly, he took the coward's way out while keeping his cushy job. Plus his admission comes after his 60 Minutes appearance when he called Obama "gutsy." That's what sticks in the public mind, not his wimpy admission (complete with nervous laughter) about the broken deal to keep operational details classified.

I thought the same thing about Robert Gates. How can he look those guys in the eye and try to make excuses. Disgusting, as with everything else in the Obama administration.

The Demos and people like Chris Matthews are in a bind: at heart, they hate real masculine men like the Navy Seals but since this operation has “helped” Obama, they want to use them as a photo op. It won’t work. Listening to Rachel Madcow attacking water boarding while applauding shooting people in the head is pretty funny coming from someone who is basically an anti-American passifist.
