For guitar, for sheer "I wonder what this is about," there's nothing better than Steve Howe's into to "Roundabout" by Yes. The first time I heard it, I thought, "hey this is pretty interesting" which morphed directly into "Holy Crap!"

For something that's "Not quite guitar, not quite bass," there's Tony Levin's intro for Elephant Talk by King Crimson, played on his Chapman Stick.

For bass, a 3 way tie... Tony Levin again for "Don't Give Up" by Peter Gabriel and John Paul Jones for "Dazed and Confused" by Led Zepplin, and finaly Michael Manring for "Cruel and Unusual" from his solo album "Thonk."

For drums, there are just so many... But one that's so simple and fits so perfectly with what's coming up in the rest of the song is Stuart Copeland's "Murder By Numbers" by The Police.
