Margate imam charged in terrorism case won't get public defender

The 24-year-old imam of a Margate mosque who faces terrorism charges will not have a court-appointed public defender because a federal judge ruled he has too much money to qualify for one. U.S. Magistrate Judge Barry Garber put Izhar Khan under oath and questioned him about his finances at a hearing Monday. Garber said the $28,000 the Muslim cleric said he has in the bank should be enough to pay for a private attorney. Khan also told the judge he owns his North Lauderdale home, valued at about $70,000, and was paid more than $3,000 a month as imam of Masjid Jamaat Al Mu'mineen.

"I would like to ask for a public defender," Khan told Garber before the judge denied the request. He set a hearing for next Monday, when the lawyer for Khan's father, Hafiz Muhammed Sher Ali Khan, 76, is expected to ask Garber to set bail.

The U.S. wants both men kept in custody until trial because they are a danger to the community and a flight risk, prosecutor John Shipley said.

Izhar Khan appeared in court alongside his father, the imam at a mosque in west Miami-Dade County. The elder Khan, Izhar Khan and another son, Irfan Khan, 37, were arrested Saturday on charges that they funneled at least $50,000 to the Pakistani Taliban in recent years....

Hafiz Khan is represented by Miami attorney Khurrum Wahid, one of the nation's most experienced at handling high-profile terrorism cases. Among his clients were Shaawar Matin Siraj, 23, a radical Muslim accused of plotting to bomb Manhattan's Herald Square subway station in 2004, and Boca Raton doctor Rafiq Sabir, 51. He was convicted of providing material support and offering treatment to wounded al-Qaida militants....

Finally, a little justice for the taxpayers. This made me smile. The puke plots terrorism and has the nerve to ask US to pay for his slimeball Muzlim lawyer who specializes in representing -- wait for it -- terrorists.

I couldn’t find any comments by the local residents regarding the arrests. When a gang of islamic money launders was arrested in my fair town, the locals made hundreds of comments about how the FBI and police were persecuting the poor muslims, and how racist our town was. Months later when several of the muslims plead guilty, there were no comments at all on the story in the paper.

Thanks for the link. The comments there seemed to run about half and half. Not near as tilted as was in our paper. Hope the FBI keeps rooting these terrorist-supporters out. They seem to be everywhere.

That is because those of us in theis community are glad to see Justice is being done. Atta, planned the 9-11 attacks right here in Coral Springs. We have one of the largest Persian populations in the state of Florida. A Swat friend of mine said this arrest is only the the beginning of what is coming to these terrorists.
