Record snow makes spectacular Yosemite waterfalls

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) -- Water, water everywhere - and it's a spectacular sight.

Record Sierra snowfall over the winter now means record snow melt as temperatures rise, swelling Yosemite National Park's iconic waterfalls, streams and rivers to their most turbulent level in years.

Yosemite Falls, the nation's tallest, is spewing enough water to fill a gasoline tanker truck every two seconds. The force of water at Bridalveil Falls across the valley kicks up a mist that clouds the meadow below.

It means that until the peak melt around mid-June, visitors will experience more treacherous beauty in Yosemite than even the travel brochures promise.

Yosemite is gorgeous every day of the year. It must be stunningly beautiful this year. Wish we could easily drive there like we could before we moved. There are things I REALLY miss about California. (High taxes not being one of them)

A wet Winter we had here in California yet the Water Department just sent us the baseline quantities of water we are allowed before penalties are imposed of water consumption.

This is most asinine, and they claimed in the letter we received that it was NOT for more profits. Well if they had to put in the letter that it emphatically stated wasn’t for more profits, then I would believe it is.

There is no place in Yosemite named Bridalveil Falls (which are at Niagara Falls). I suppose the author meant Bridalveil Fall, which is in Yosemite Valley. Just sayin...

We drove through Tioga Falls last year the first day they opened it.

There were waterfalls everywhere, some even onto the road. Totally fantastic! The most beautiful I have ever seen Yosemite.

I agree, used to live 2 hrs away from Yosemite and 1 hr from Kings Canyon. My kids still live there and I miss them and the National Parks.

Anyone goes there be sure not to miss Kings Canyon and Sequoia national Parks. They are all a day trip from Fresno.

Wonderful country the libs have taxed us out of............
I am homesick........

We were just there and that falls were beautiful. We also enjoyed all the snow on the ground as we went over the mountains going in. Bridalveil was so powerful, I could not get close to it because I did not want to get my camera soaked. The paved trail had an inch of water running down it too. People walking back from it looked like they had got caught in a storm. We only spent a day there, but we really enjoyed it.

We lived in Fresno too, until my mom got sick and we came back to AZ. We had a home near Pine Flat Lake and sold it in January. I miss the people and the beautiful foothills but not the insane politics.

I always tell native born Californians, who’ve never been to Yosemite, that Yosemite is over rated.

I’m trying to keep the tourist count down in my park.

Shasta Dam, the main aquifer for most of California (via the Cali aquaduct system) is 2 feet from the top. Another week and it will be overflowing the spillways.

I have made 3 flight from Glacier Point in my hangglider.

Awesome every time!

Funny, I’ve never been to Yosemite otherwise as a “tourist”

Yes, and our own local resources are either at peak now, or as is Big Bear having to open the spillways.

Our neighbor is Lake Mathews. We can see the Lake from the road to the ranch as we come down the hill. It’s at a peak never before seen by us in the 24 years we’ve been here.

That is so very beautiful. It’s a shame it’s located out of country, in a place called California.

I took my family there about 40 years ago and we loved it, but I will never return to California.

And to think, in the near future, 50,000 magically reformed predators, will be released from nearby prisons, and will be able to enjoy the wonderment.

We were just there, and the rest of our visit we were in San Francisco. Our son is a grad student at Stanford. Within three hours of our plane landing (in San Jose), we suffered a smash and grab attack (in Palo Alto). Surprisingly my husband got a phone call yesterday from the police saying they think they have caught the guy who did it, but they did not have any of our lost stuff. Wonder what they will do with this guy - who was caught with other people’s stuff, just not ours.

You jumped off Glacier point? In a hang glider. I was there for sunrise one morning and saw folks sitting on the outcrops. Just looking over the edge made me queasy.

Good for you. Tons of respect from this chicken.

It’s awesome.

Three steps and you’re 3000 feet in the air. On a good day you can fly across the valley and take a whole visual tour. One a bad day (like on one of my flights) I could only manage one turn to the left after launch, straight to the landing area, make a 180 degree turn and land... over in about 8 minutes or less. ALL of the air in the valley was going down at that time.

I’ve launched from higher mountains and flew a lot longer but you just can’t beat the view of Yosemite. Get there before 8AM and you’ll be able to see the gliders launch.

Most importantly, as you know, you folks weren’t hurt... or worse.

I’m glad they caught the bad guy... unfortunately, he most likely won’t do much time in that crumbling system down there.

Stay safe......

We lived as Sherwood forest golf club. Bet you drove by us on your way to Reedley or Sanger.
Before that I lived in Dinuba and worked for Alpha Beta.
Grew up near Orange Cove, at the lookingup at Sequoia Natl’ Park everyday. How I miss it all here in Kingman.
