End Near for Zimbabwe's Last White Farmers
VOA ^ | May 30, 2011 | Peta Thornycroft

Zimbabwean farmers attend a meeting of white commercial farmers in capital Harare

Zimbabwe's Supreme Court heard a case on behalf of three farmers who claimed the constitution excluded confiscation of their land because they bought their properties after the colonial era ended with independence in 1980.

The Supreme Court did not agree and quickly dismissed their application.

One of the farmers, Colin Cloete, a former president of the Commercial Farmers’ Union at the height of often violent land invasions seven years ago, was one of the applicants.

He, like many of his colleagues, has been arrested, harassed and appeared in court many times, to try to stay on his farm.

Like most surviving white farmers, the cost of going to court to try to fight his eviction has been unaffordable.

Looking back over the long and difficult years, Cloete, now 58, said his struggle to remain on his farm did not make economic sense.

“Economically we should have moved off then, at the beginning, as we would have been 10 years younger and that much more energetic,” said Cloete.

Cloete said he had begun looking looking for a house in Harare, not least so he could move his possessions to safety.

He said the land invasions launched after Mr. Mugabe lost a referendum in 2000 had hurt him and Zimbabwe’s economy, and no one had benefited from this except the elite in the ZANU-PF Party.

“We are treated like second-class citizens, we are treated like we are still just visitors to this place. My father was born in this country, before Mr. Mugabe, but I am still a visitor,” said Cloete.

I’ve known for decades that the rule of law is irrelevant here as well; no white male has any misconception about how the law treats him in terms of employment/promotions, higher education, or interracial disputes of any kind.

I felt terrible about the individuals lost on 9/11, living a few miles west of the WTC in a town that lost people, but at the same time felt like I was watching a foreign group attack another foreign country that I happened to be living in.

I don’t know that South Africa has gotten as bad (yet); the blacks were begging the whites to stay in South Africa, as without them they literally had no schoolteachers, doctors, etc.

I believe that is why more whites in South Africa are better off than in Zimbabwe; the black ruling class realizes that without them (at least for the time being) the country is doomed. The events on their northern border can demonstrate that for the black ruling class in SA better than anything else could; Zimbabwe’s problems are spilling across the border, and black South Africans are beating the immigrant horde back.

Things change. They should have gotten out a long time ago. Now they will basically have to flee.

I was in Zimbabwe in the mid 80s. The Rhodies then were seeing the handwriting on the wall. A lot of them got out. The Anglos headed back to Blighty or to Australia or NZ. The Boers went back to South Africa. They were all trying to unload whatever they could just to get enough hard currency to bail. The currency of choice was the Kruegerrand, solid gold. Poor sods. They and their forefathers had invested everything in Rhodesia and it worked. Then along came “uhuru.”

They’ll eat, and be literate; it certainly lifted Ireland out of the Stone Age. Without those basics they are just more black people holding their hands out to whites for alms...

Which one did the following Mugabe or Obama

1. Water down the currency
2. Facilitate black farmer “reparations”
3. Encourage racial polarization
4. Advocate energy policies that increased energy costs
5. Pursue policies that intend to slow or restrict economic growth

Obama is telling you white people, you may have been born here but the colored world will take back what you colonialist stole. Third world immigrants and the non-western demographic will soon change America. It may be inevitable just as with South Africa, Rhodesia, and its what the non-Jews want to do to Israel. They won't have to fight they will just vote democracy away.

I remember doing a report on Rhodesia in high school, back in the ‘60s.
Back then the place was known as, “The Breadbasket of Africa”.

Now Rhodesia’s name has been changed to “Zimbabwe” and it’s become just another starving third-world toilet.
I wonder what happened?

“They were all trying to unload whatever they could just to get enough hard currency to bail.”

The lucky ones left with something; those remaining will be lucky to escape with their lives. When East Africa gained its independence (Kenya/Uganda), they let British whites leave with their property to maintain relations with Britain afterwards. They were less merciful with the Indians (settled there at the behest of the British), who were forced out with the clothes on their backs.

The lesson here (as in Northern Ireland) is that when the crown encourages you to settle in an area, don’t believe you will have their support forever; they’ll trade your rights away in a heartbeat. Rhodesia fought for Britain in their darkest hours, and was repaid with abandonment. At least Portugal and France fought for their settlers...

I don’t disagree with what you said about the Crown. Question though — where did Portugal fight for its settlers?

The sad thing is I knew one Zimbabwe white guy who came to England. He was completely out of sea there — he was really, like I’m sure most white Zimbabweans were/are — completely African. He may have had white skin but he was African, he loved the continent.

Angola, for years; it was called Portugal’s Vietnam. Even Goa had to be stormed by Indian troops to take it from Portugal.

"If they, the white farmers, came to the United States, would they be classified as African-American?"

Some of them have already been denied. The remaining ones probably can't afford the high attorney fees, transportation costs and other relocation costs.

"The sad thing is I knew one Zimbabwe white guy who came to England. He was completely out of sea there..."

I knew one who visited the USA for a time and was unsuccessful at being legally allowed to stay. He was completely western culture and would have fit in fine here except for our mad transition over more than three decades to contemporary political correctness.

As for other concerns about people near the Equator, many Americans have had their children permanently and officiously stolen by the globally concerned for no more reason than carrying their own water in containers while building their own water systems.

Sadly, I don’t disagree.

It’s just that I remember the blacks screaming that during assemblies I was required to attend. Yet, if they really wanted justice, they wouldn’t do this, or the flash mobs.

They never really were for justice at all.

It makes a mockery of all that they claim was wrong that they continue to want redress for. Hypocrites. On both continents.

Angola! I knew I was forgetting something.

on Goa I know more -- the Portuguese refused to give it up -- with some reason, they had ruled for 450 years and intermingled with the populace. In the end they defiantly said no, but they had no choice and no means to keep Goa. The Indian army just walked in.
