I had to fly UAL twice. Neither time was my bag at the destination. Both times the bags went to the warehouse in Chicago. I spoke to the agent on the phone who had seen one bag and knew where it was. The company at first said I needed to pay for handling costs for the bags going to Chicago and shipping costs to return them to me. The next day they said they could not locate the bags and were not liable so I would not be compensated. That's after filling out several claims forms they sent me. I know they have a big "unclaimed" luggage auction periodically in Chicago. They have to get merchandise for it somehow. I have communicated with other UAL passengers and have come to truly believe that they do not load a certain percentage of economy class luggage. I may have to fly UAL again but I won't check bags any more. Why just give them my stuff? I got along okay buying all new clothes when I got there. I don't need to check bags.

The attitudes of the UAL people I dealt with except for the one agent in Chicago were totally arrogant. They noted twice that, after all, I did fly in economy class.

I try to Fly KAL or Nippon but sometimes that is not possible. Those companies treat passengers like they eagerly seek their business again.

I was a little bit prepared for UAL- I brought my survival rations. In Việt Nam the fare served up by UAL for dinner would be called Train Food. The trains are about the only regular source of unpleasant victuals in the country.

P.S. on one of those trips I had to abort because my passport "disappeared" in the TSA screening.

My family and I fly Southwest fairly frequently, and we’ve never had any type of problem with rudeness, involuntary bumping, lost luggage, etc. SWA even lets you have two free checked bags per person. I know a lot of folks don’t like SWA because they don’t assign seating and don’t have some of the amenities that other airlines have, but we’ve never found that to be a problem.
