DETROIT (WXYZ) - A major power outage is affecting several areas in and around downtown Detroit. Street lights and traffic lights are also out causing issues for drivers trying to get around the city.
The Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, the McNamara Federal building and Frank Murphy Hall of Justice have all been evacuated. Cobo Center is also without power.
Many street lights and traffic lights in the area are out.
A spokesperson for Mayor Dave Bing says three major tie lines have failed causing the outage.
Action News crews report that traffic lights are out on Woodward from Jefferson to Montcalm.
Al Jordan, who is in charge of utilities for the City of Detroit, confirmed that the issue was due to the tie lines at the Mystersky Center in southwest Detroit.
Wayne State University is also affected by the outage and has canceled all classes for the rest of the day. Classes will resume on Friday, unless otherwise notified.
The Wayne County Community college downtown campus and administration building are also closed because of the outage. There will be no People Mover service tonight.

Detroit Police and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department report that their facilities still have power, but they are conserving energy by turning off computers and air conditioning to try and lift some of the strain on the system.
According to Comerica Park, the Detroit Tigers game scheduled for tonight is still on. The stadium has power. It may be tricky getting there and dealing with parking as many traffic lights are out in the area.
The Detroit Institute of Arts is closed, as well as a film event scheduled for tonight at the DIA’s theaters - Double Features with Richard Chew.

With only half the population that they had a few decades ago, and with more efficient appliances, light bulbs, etc since a few decades ago, how can it be possible that they have more than halved their capacity? This is what you get when you elect only Democrats.
