I am curious, you didn’t answer the question as to whether you have kids.

I smacked my kids on the bottom at 2, my grandson who is 2 got a spanking the other day, sometimes he gets time out - depends on the severity of what he’s done. Fortunately they are raising their kids properly and we go out to eat and they don’t bother other people. Not saying he’s a perfect dinner companion but he’s not disruptive. He wiggles and squiggles.

Spanking a nearly two year-old is an entirely apropriate method of disclipline.

people calling their own little toddlers "brats" and "twerps"

How about rug rats and ankle biters? Is that acceptable?

On this, at least, we fully agree.

"You don't spank children today," said Longoria, "in the old days, maybe we got spanked, but there was a different quarrel. You don't spank children. You understand?"

This guy will probably be letting REAL criminals go, he's so full of PC crap.

"You don't deport undocumented immigrants today," said Liberal, "in the old days, maybe you sent them back after the growing season, but there was a different era. You don't deport immigrants. You understand, boy?"

"You don't punish Holder's people today," said Liberal, "in the old days, maybe they got punished, but that was racist. You don't punish minorities. You understand, bo-yuh?"

"You don't punish Muslim terrorists today," said Liberal, "in the old days, Obama (peace be upon him!) killed Osama bin Laden, but that was to help his re-election campaign. You don't frisk Muslims, just buxom blondes. And you promote people with "Soldier of Allah" on their business card so they can massacre our unarmed troops at Ft. Hood. You understand, bo-yuh?"

NO cheers, unfortunately.

people calling their own little toddlers "brats" and "twerps"...

When my four siblings and I used to swarm our dad when he came home from work, he would feign fear and say "Help! Help! It's the Brat-Like Creatures from the Deep Lagoon!"

He also used to refer to us that way when rounding us up to go somewhere: "Come on, Brat-Like Creatures from the Deep Lagoon!"

Oh, and we got swatted every now and then if we crossed those boundaries our parents set.

I guess it's a wonder any of us turned out OK. ;-)

“People who take two year olds to restaurants and expect them to be quiet are sadistic idiots. “

Speak for your own kids, please.

1973 or 1974 was the year that Children's Protective Services got started, under the post-Watergate Congress; IIRC it was Patsy Schroeder (Weeper-CO) who helped push for it, and the C.Henry Kempe Center. Reading their early material is fascinating for the things they admit which would never be allowed into evidence today (e.g. a lot of cases of young childhood injuries were by parents getting drunk after work, and tossing the kid back and forth to one another, or kids jumping off of the tops of refrigerators.) This was felt to be grounds for admonishment, and maybe parenting classes, but not automatic termination of parental rights.

But with the growth of the bureaucracy, it had to justify its budget every year, and it had to spend the budget it had earned in past years.

Besides, with endless liberal advocacy groups, social services, specialists in childhood emotional development, recovered memories, federal grants for social work for "at-risk" kids or for foster parents, there was *TREMENDOUS* pressure to pull more kids into the system to keep the federal dollars flowing.

Not to mention the Wenatchee and similar "organized child abuse" rings; or the allegations of sexual abuse in divorce.

Fortunately, with the impending bankruptcy of the government, it looks like a lot of the bullsh!t will grind to a halt.

NO cheers, unfortunately.

I had a problem with this too. Under what authority can this IDIOT judge make this claim? Certainly not under Texas law.

Are you serious?

If your child is accustomed to sitting at a quiet dinner table every night there is no problem.

Not based on the squib from the AG’s office.

The problem is that she plead. VERY hard to shift that “knowing” waiver of one’s right to a trial. I -hate- plea bargains!

“Through most of human history, parents cared for their two year olds. Round the clock. And they loved it. Now, they pop ‘em out, throw ‘em into daycare, and expect them to be perfect. Parents in America are mostly selfish brats and a lot of people on FR are too, it seems. IMHO this all started in 1973!”

After blasting you a bunch...I actually agree with most of this. A LOT of FReepers STILL send their kids to public schools (even after everything that’s been posted here), and that just makes your point.

“This parent, who left noticeable red marks, probably went well beyond what most parents regard as “spanking,” namely a few open-palmed swats to a doubly-clothed tuchus.”

If it doesn’t leave marks it isn’t a spanking and any parent that doesn’t spank their kids need to be jailed!

Hitting a kid who's not even TWO??? That's barbaric. As much as I despise the child welfare state, this woman did a horrible thing and is probably on her way to worse.

Oh, get real. Where do you people come from? Do you even have children? If so I hope I never have the misfortune of being anywhere around your two year old.

I have seen the damage done to young children by parents who feel like any corporal punishment is wrong, but psychological manipulation and making excuses for their behavior is OK.

That's not the spirit of the earlier posters. There's a couple of people here who have anger issues with little kids, IMHO.

When I was little, my Dad would pretend to spit on his hand and warm up to give me “a lickin’”. It was all great fun. Like your Dad.

I'd forgotten that. Now, I'm sad. But, thanks for the memory!

I don't know what really happened in this case (thanks to incompetent journalism) but that statement from the judge is a broad brush of the law and he's full of it. What the heck was the "different quarrel" in "the old days?" Do kids not misbehave today? Do they not respond to discipline? I think a stroll through Youtube should be enough to answer that question.

On Monday I met someone who wants to run for the Republican nomination against that judge.

That sounds like a fortuitous coincidence. Is this current guy a Dem and typically liberal-minded like this? I usually don’t know anything about the judges on the ballot so I skip voting on them. I’d rather do that than take the 50/50 coin toss approach.
