Palin vs. Perry in 2012?
The Atlantic ^ | 06/16/2011 | Beth Reinhard

Sarah Palin jokingly calls Texas "Alaska's little sister state,'' but its governor -- and her political ally -- Rick Perry could be a big obstacle to her own potential White House run.

While the breakout performance by Rep. Michele Bachmann at Monday's GOP presidential debate has set off speculation that the Minnesotan could usurp Palin as the favorite of Republican tea party activists and religious conservatives, Perry's announcement that he's taking a second look at a White House run sets up an intriguing potential showdown between two politicians who, up to now, have had an unusually warm relationship.

In a GOP field devoid of a commanding front-runner, Perry's crowd-whipping talent, rapport with the evangelical community, tea-party-friendly disdain for government, and prodigious fundraising network make him an increasingly attractive presidential candidate. Those are the same assets that Palin would bring to a campaign -- except that she also carries all of the political baggage collected since John McCain chose her as his running mate in 2008. What's more, the three-term governor of Texas can point to far more executive experience than his pal, who quit her job as governor of Alaska after two and a half years.

"When you line them up next to each other, he's superior in every facet," said Texas-based political consultant and lobbyist Bill Miller, who has never worked for Perry. "His entry into the race would be very bad for Palin if she wants to run. The only thing she has that he doesn't is celebrity, but that's not enough to become a nominee."

Just as the friendship between Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour and Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels was recently scrutinized for clues about whether they would run for president against each other (they both passed on the race), now the attention turns to Perry-Palin relationship.

They walk onto a stage together, and Rick says “We haven’t decided yet whether it will be ‘Palin & Perry’,” and Sarah says “or ‘Perry & Palin’ but we’re both running, you betcha!”

THAT, would be very KEWL!

Palin wouldn’t win general either; too many hate her with a passion. They would come out just to vote against her. Be realistic.

Priority #1 .. Our candidate must be able to beat Obama

You guys, you keep leaving off the important stuff.

Palin can fetch coffee to the real movers and shakers meetings, and as a plus she can bake some cookies.

I think Perry has a better chance of beating Obama than Palin but I think Palin, if elected, will do far better for the country than if Perry is elected. Palin is more of an ideologue than Perry and we will need one to roll back the last four years rather than one who will simply tweak at the edges.

If Palin announces on July 4th, as I think she will, ...

I'll bet a bushel of NM green chili to a Missouri mule that she will announce in mid-August at the earliest, if she runs at all.

(BTW, what would I do with a Missouri mule, anyway?? Got anything else to offer? ;>))

This election is about Good and Evil, if we don’t recognize that, then it doesn’t really matter. If we have to have a mush headed muli-cultural moderate to beat Obama, then we should prepare to explain to God, why we did this to the only Blessed Nation in this world.

You could run Jay. I predict that the won will not get 50% of the vote no matter who runs. That being said, why do we insist on another mush headed middle of the road candidate?

Is less good, not just a synonym for evil?

Baring a miracle, hussein will still be failing in Oct 2012. Anyone will beat him.

You do have a point, there is a very insignificant percentage of PDS victims out there.

“In a GOP field devoid of a commanding front-runner,”

I have a baseline disagreement with the premise of this statement: that 17 months before the election, there NEEDS to be a “commanding front-runner”. There doesn’t. We’re listening to the potential nominees and determining which of them best reflects the conservative values that the majority of Republicans hold.

The people that truly hate Gov. Palin are Liberals, and Liberals going to turn out to support Obama, whether the Republican nominee is Palin, Herman Cain, Romney, Bachmann, etc. What's most important is who will turn out our vote.

Being realistic (which I always attempt in posting), let's see a campaign prior to making any final decisions. Suspect a lot of things are going to unfold in the months ahead.

Palin uses symbols better than any candidate out there at present. She resigned her Governorship on the July 4th weekend, I suspect she will announce her candidacy at the same time.

Why? To take on the charge of “quitter” head on. Get it out of the way and push through the attack.
