NY gov lobbying senators in gay marriage fight

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is lobbying individual senators in a quest to secure what appears to be one more vote needed to legalize gay marriage in New York and deliver a major win for the national effort.

The Democrat met with three Republican senators in his Capitol office Thursday and plans to meet with more on Friday, the day Senate Republican leader Dean Skelos predicted his house would bring the bill to a floor vote.

The quietly-called meetings come as talks drag on, leading the Senate's Democratic leader to say Republicans are more concerned with protecting their majority.

Some advocates thought a gay marriage law could be enacted as early as Tuesday.

"The meetings are ongoing," said Cuomo spokesman Josh Vlasto, putting no end date to the closed-door sessions.

"I'm still a `no,' I'm still talking to people, so I'll let that speak for itself," said Republican Sen. Andrew Lanza of Staten Island after leaving Cuomo's office Thursday night.

He said he continues to seek further protections for religious groups opposed to gay marriage so they can't be prosecuted for discrimination if they refuse to allow their property or services to be used during gay marriage ceremonies.

Heterosexual monogamous marriage is the bedrock of human civilization and so-called same-sex marriage will be its undoing. Civil union is nothing but a device to grease the rails for same-sex marriage. Then of what value is marriage? If homosexuals can marry then why not brothers and sisters or fathers and daughters? Why same sex only? Why not allow a group of swingers to marry maybe 3 husbands and 3 wives all married together? Hey what is stopping polygamists from demanding the same rights and priviledges accorded two person marriages? Why limit it to people?

I suspect your solution is to just refuse to have the government get involved in Family Law altogether. No Marriages, no Divorces, no child custody suits, no adoptions, no family recognition whatsoever.

Hey, this is a conservative forum not a nut-job libertarian forum. And this country was founded on Christian and Jewish customs and laws. If you were a conservative you would want to conserve the foundations that made this country great. But instead you appear to be some kind of anarchist libertarian that wants to destroy the very fabric of our society by denying the basis upon which this nation was founded.

It is a recorded FACT that many if not most of the Founding Fathers deplored slavery, but were forced to compromise in order to insure passage of the Constitution.
