Opponents say they have not exhausted their options for fighting a proposal to build a Catholic hospital on the grounds of Montgomery College in Germantown, despite approval of the plan last week by the state Board of Public Works.
...three-member board voted Wednesday to allow Montgomery College to lease land to Holy Cross Hospital for a new 93-bed, $202-million hospital....
...planned hospital must still be approved by the county Planning Board a process that will give opponents another chance to testify against the project, which was approved in January by the Maryland Health Care Commission after a more-than-two-year competition with another hospital proposal.
...project has been criticized by womens groups and others who contend the college could violate separation-of-church-and-state laws by leasing public land to Holy Cross, which typically refuses on religious grounds to perform abortions and infertility treatments or provide birth control.
It would be the first hospital built in more than 30 years in Montgomery County and would not provide the full range of services to patients, said Beth Corbin, field director for Americans United for Separation of Church and State.
...her group, which testified at the Wednesday public works meeting, will continue its opposition and is weighing its options, but declined to say whether it will initiate legal action to block the project.
.....officials including State Sen. Jennie M. Forehand, Montgomery Democrat, complained mostly about the proposed Holy Cross location, activists argued its limited pregnancy services could harm women and be potentially illegal.
.....president of the Maryland National Organization for Women, worried Holy Cross could overlook many of the advances in birth control, fertility and end-of-life services that have come about in the three decades since the county last had a new hospital.
We look at this as a terrible precedent going forward, she said.....

Holy Cross Hospital is a really good institution. Very pro-life.
But the pro-death libtards would rather see people get sick and die than have a pro-life hospital in their midst.
Build a modern, non-profit hospital; before you know it, the whole neighborhood goes...
Funny. This seems like a step FORWARD to me.
While its difficult to reconcile banning abortions with a philosophy of limited government to some conservatives, ENCOURAGING institutions which PROMOTE and RESPECT human life while PENALIZING those that don’t (Planned Parenthood) is something ALL conservatives should be agreeable in promoting.
"Woe to you when all speak well of you."
Ad maiorem Dei gratias.
Bump!
Holy Cross is a great hospital!
Holy Cross is a great hospital!
The principles of equal access and social justice are all very well, but you can't use them to bulldoze every objection on grounds of practicality, functionality and effectiveness. If this hospital is not built, then people with cancer, diabetes, heart disease and a hundred other ailments will suffer, but that apparently is a price worth paying to these organisations. The fact that you could get an abortion from institutions that will provide such things pretty much anywhere in the country is apparently immaterial. Everyone has to agree with these children, or they won't let you play.
“would not provide the full range of services to patients...”
Let me guess.. “Ms.” Corbin....upset there’ll not be coronary artery bypass and liver and kidney transplants offered?
But the pro-death libtards would rather see people get sick and die than have a pro-life hospital in their midst.
What you said...
Some Women’s logic: You can’t build a Catholic hospital because we can’t kill babies in it. Good grief.
The Forgotten Clause to the 1st Amendment.
So because a HOSPITAL will not KILL babies these assclowns would deny the community a healthcare resource?
These people are beyond idiots, they are dangerous...
Killing babies, by any other name, smells as sickly.
On a completely clinical note, the spread of “Superbugs” is perpetuated by these giant petri dishes. If we want to minimize the effect of these bacteria, we need less hospitals not more. If the money spent on hospitals were spent on increasing available nurses (significantly impacting the unemployment problem) and keeping patients in their homes, there would be a significant decrease in these infections. Yes I am a nurse and have watched this spread of infection for 30 years.
Forgotten? They’re working to erase it, but I think we’re making progress against entrenched liberalism. Look how differently people respond to the current crisis than to the Great Depression.

Greetings wildkitten:
Modern hospital HVAC systems significantly reduce the quantity and duration of airborne critters. If you really want to get sick, visit an old hospital.
From the way I see nursing, we already have a severe shortage of nursing educators; therefore, we face a long term shortage of Nurses.
Cheers,
OLA
Better no new hospital than a new Catholic hospital???
