Males dogs can smell a female in heat for miles away. If he valued the dog it should NOT have been left unattended while in heat. If he had left his keys in his car and his possessions on his front lawn you would not be defending his stupidity.

I have 25 hunting dogs, hounds. Of the 25, 20 are bitches. At this time, I have 3 bitches in season. They are behind a 6’6” woven wire fence with a hot wire on top. There is ground wire to prevent digging in or out.
We have a female house pet. She is spayed. She is the fourth bitch we have had as a house pet, all spayed.
I lock my doors. I have a burglar alarm on my house. I lock my doors when I drive. I am not allowed to shoot a guy dead if he steals the stereo out of my truck.

As for bitches in season....as others have pointed out, if a bitch in season is left unattended in an area that is not secure, some dog will breed her. Hooker just happened to be the closest and the first.
As for all of the nonsense about my stero and my personal property, there are insurance companies that take a dim view of paying policy holders for losses when the policy holder has not made a reasonable effort to protect his/her belongings.
There are even jurisdictions where one can get a summons for leaving ones keys in the ignition of an unattended vehicle.
The point being that only an idiot does not take reasonable precautions to protect his property.
