Given what the family is going through, I don’t blame them for wanting this mess put to rest.
I accept apologies from people when they are offered. I don’t tend to forget what warranted the apology, though. I do my best to forgive, as I am expected to do.
Even when I don’t necessarily believe the person is sincerely sorry, I accept the apology. If they are deceitful, that is between them and God. And just because I accept the apology does not mean I will make the mistake of assuming everything is peachy-keen and trust them again.
But like I said, the father probably just wants to be left alone to grieve with his family.
