White House Wants Cars to Average 56.2 MPG by 2025

The Obama administration is telling American automakers that it would like cars and light trucks to average 56.2 miles per gallon by 2025.

Government and industry sources familiar with the discussions say that's the number being floated by administration officials in the early rounds of negotiations on a 2017-2025 fuel economy standard.

The White House wants to boost fuel economy to reduce reliance on oil and cut down on global warming pollution.

Your going to be crammed into that Government Motors Chevy Volt whether you like it or not! Which is a good reason the government shouldn’t be in the automotive business...

A leader should always lead. I think Obama should make those gas-guzzling monstrosities that he rides around in, at our expense, be the first.

and they also want ethanol to be at least 15% of gasoline...

By 2025, no one will care what Barack Obama thinks about anything. This is just election-year posturing. Al Gore raked him over the coals the other day for not having done squat about Global Warming, so here he comes now with what he intends to do in 2025. There must be people stupid enough to fall for this, but hopefully not many.

The ruling class feels very comfortable imposing laws on the peasants that will not affect them.

That won't last much longer. Redistribution of discomfort is on the agenda.

I think an average 56 mpg is doable if he can get Congress to repeal the Law of Gravity.

Worse case Obama is gone 2019 six years before this. 56.2 MPG is a toy car for GI Joe and Barbie.

Yes. Since Obama & cohorts are simply pulling numbers out of a hat, they might as well have gone for something much larger.

Gosh why not 100 MPG? or 1000? There is only two ways to get to 56.2 MPG: smaller lighter cars, that are more aerodynamic. I was an Automotive Engineer for 20years and all the low hanging fruit as been picked in terms of increasing MPG. Maybe they will change the rules again and not count certain types of trucks (light trucks) and SUV's or Cross-overs.

56.2 mpg, not 56.1 or 49.8??

Besides the fact that liberals have no knowledge of “significant digits”, they really should stay far away from any kind of science.

Just stick to things they can comprehend like “Dick and Jane” books, the “View” on tv, or simple tools like a wedge.

And a good reason for the present government to be fired in 2012. I want to see Pelosis flabby old @ss get into a car that can get 56 miles per gal. I bet that would wipe that botox grin off her face. No, she prefers limousines and jets. Fire her butt!

My first motor vehicle was a soingle cylinder Honda Super 90 “motorcycle” that I used to commute to law school in 1966 annd 1967, which had a top speed of about 45 mph. Even that little machine didn’t get 50 mpg.

This is why the CEO of GM was 100% correct, when he said that a gas tax increase would be better than CAFE standards. CAFE standards will distort the world's car markets (and, incidentally, result in thousands of otherwise preventable deaths).

I understand that owners of the diesel powered VW Jetta get very good mileage (40+). It seems that if they eliminated the transmission and had the diesel mated to a generator that would power electric motors on the wheels, it would be very efficient.

They would only need a regular battery for starting. And the Jetta has room for 4 or 5. I am not really a VW fan, but the new diesels seem very fuel effecient.

That’s what I was thinking — then I checked it out using this handy converter:
http://www.vangeyn.net/mpg/?mpg=56.2&submit=Convert

Turns out that it doesn’t come out even in metric either.

56.2 MPG converted to KM/L (L/100KM) is 23.89 KM/L (4.19 L/100KM)
