EUGENE -- The Eugene City Council voted 6-2 to recite the Pledge of Allegiance at four meetings each year close to patriotic holidays: Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Flag Day and the Fourth of July.

It was a compromise after Councilor Mike Clark suggested that the pledge be recited at the start of each regular meeting.

KEYWORDS:
Apparently there has been a row among the Eugene, Oregon City Council over the legitimacy of reciting the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of meetings. One council member said that she didn't feel it is right to say the pledge because she considers herself "a citizen of the world." Another member said that the pledge "doesn't move the city's business forward and does not unite us."

Some things are so incredible they don't even need commentary. Is it American to refuse to pledge your allegiance to America?

She should go to Mecca and announce her citizenry.

She’s only a “citizen of the world” until we get invaded. Then she’ll proclaim to be a citizen of the Galaxy or Universe. Whichever one is convenient for a quisling.

OK...then the citizens should only pay their taxes in the same percentage the Council does the Pledge.

If I were Mike Clark, I’d stand up and say it by myself at the start of every meeting whether anyone joined in or not.

The last time I looked, most politicians in Oregon are either ex-teachers or Californians. This should answer why they do things the way they do.

One of the benefits of living out here in the Texas Piney Woods boondocks is that the folks here don’t put up with much ACLU/PC bull. Even our county commissioners’ court meetings start with prayer and the Pledge — and it’s right there on the published agenda.

I have some memories of when I lived in Eugene in the 1980’s. During the Presidential Primary in 1984, Jesse Jackson won the Democratic vote in Eugene. In the same primary, there was a comedian named Jerry “Wheat Germ” Campbell on the ballot. He was a local funny-man, if i remember correctly, who campaigned on a farcical, hippie/free love type platform and made appearances wearing a long-haired wig. He actually beat out several serious candidates and came in fourth out of a field of about 8 candidates. Eugene is the home of the University of Oregon and a hot-bed of radical thinking. I am not surprised to hear this story.

Hey, I’ve got a “compromise” to suggest. Let’s say we just agree to protect Eugene from terrorist attacks 4 days out of every year?

One has to wonder how and why these people do what they do.

Is it American to refuse to pledge your allegiance to America?

Yes.

Ironically, considering current proponents and opponents of the pledge, it's a socialist thing. It's purpose is to subsume the individual to the collective.
