US Inmates 'Forced to Wear Dirty Underwear'

A clothing shortage is forcing inmates in at least one Illinois prison to wear the same underwear several days in a row, causing a health and hygiene concern, a watchdog group said.

The John Howard Association found during a recent visit to the Taylorville Correctional Center that inmates wore dirty and badly worn clothes that were washed twice a week, The Bloomington Pantagraph newspaper reported for a story published on Wednesday.

The prison in central Illinois issues each inmate only two pairs of underwear, which means they must be worn multiple days without washing.

"The practice of administering used underwear that inmates must wear multiple days without washing raises serious hygiene concerns," a report issued by the group states. "(The Department of Corrections) must find a way to provide sufficient clothing for inmates."

"I think this is a problem system wide," said John Maki, who is director of the association. He said the underwear shortage is a symptom of larger problems such as overcrowding in the state's prisons.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Corrections says officials are doing their best in difficult financial times. The state has a multibillion-dollar budget deficit.

Local community groups, church organizations, other misguided folks have pledged 'Underwear Drives' to help ameliorate the plight of underwear-less inmates, end the shortage in, uh, shorts.

Boo frickin' hoo! Tell that to our soldiers in the field. I've gone several days with the same clothing during field exercises.

McClean Stevenson, Col. Potter on MASH, said when he was in Navy boot camp the Chief punished them all by not allowing them to change underwear. After about a week they begged him to let them change. He gave in and said “Okay, you guys can change underwear. Stevenson! You change with Smith. Smith! You change with Jones. Jones!.....”

Don't do the crime if you can't do the grime.

Quite seriously, though, I think every day each inmate should change his underwear . . . he changes with his cell mate, that guy changes with his cellmate, etc.

And that cell changes their underwear with the next cell's underwear, etc.

Kinda' chokes me up that they're being so mistreated.

Overcrowding?

And an underwear shortage?

We MUST release all these prisoners. NOW!

Dirty underwear? I guess these folks never went to college. I hate to admit it, but I hate to employ the smell test on more than a few mornings.

They can live with it.

They can get at least four days from two pairs.

Pair one, worn normal day 1, inside out day 2.

Pair two, worn normal day 3, inside out day 4.

By then you can wear pair one again, and then inside out one more time.

I seem to remember, from years ago, the clinton’s listing used (though probably laundered ... probably) underwear donated as part of their charitable giving. Maybe they have something to chip in. Especially since it is for the state where the democrat farm team is in training.

My Dad used to tell this joke:

An Army Platoon was having a tough go of it, but then news started spreading through the ranks that they’d at LEAST have a change of skivvies to brighten up their miserable existence...

The soldiers were called to formation, and the First Sergeant announced the change in skivvies and then said while pointing:

“YOU change with HIM, and YOU change with HIM, and YOU change with HIM...”

Still cracks me up and grosses me out at the same time, which my Dad is famous for in his jokes, LOL! :)
