Militants from Afghanistan attack Pakistani post

Around 60 Afghan militants attacked a Pakistani paramilitary checkpoint in a cross-border raid Monday, killing one soldier and sparking a gunbattle that lasted for more than two hours, a government official said.

The battle highlights the unrest in a border zone that has raised tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan over efforts to crack down on militant groups, including Taliban fighters and al-Qaida factions.

Pakistan has complained that militants coming from Afghan bases have killed at least 55 paramilitary soldiers and tribal police over the last month. Afghan officials, in turn, have complained that Pakistan has launched hundreds of rockets into eastern Afghanistan since May, killing at least 40 people in areas about 125 miles (205 kilometers) east of Kabul.
