It seems that to be taxed on list-price value is the problem. If one was taxed on the ‘cost’ to the team, the team wouldn’t have sold it at that price anyway.

I suspect his attitude was that he didn't EARN the ball, but that Jeter EARNED it.
Yes that is what he said. He is a great American and so is Derek Jeter.
Let the Yankees pick up the tax bill.
