Congress: Mixed conservative reaction to McConnell's punt (Not "mixed" here, it's a bad deal)

Roll Call’s headline: “McConnell Tries to Up Debt Limit and Stick It to Obama.” From the story: “Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) may have found a way to prevent the government from reaching a catastrophic default on its debt, ensure that his Republican Conference members won't have to vote again on the debt limit before the next election and force President Barack Obama to own the political consequences… That doesn't mean it was met warmly, however, even by members of his own Conference.”

The plan in a nutshell: “Under McConnell's Plan B, the president would send a request to Congress for a series of three debt limit increases between now and the 2012 elections, but those increases would have to be offset with proposals for spending reductions elsewhere. Congress would be allowed to vote on joint resolutions of disapproval intended to kill the increases, but the president would be able to veto those resolutions. Congress then would have to come up with a two-thirds supermajority to prevent the debt ceiling from increasing.”

The Hill: “McConnell’s proposal would authorize Obama to raise the debt ceiling in three steps, and would not require any corresponding spending cuts. The proposal met immediate, fierce criticism from grassroots conservatives, who are furious at the lack of firm spending cuts, but House GOP leaders and the White House held their fire.”

Has Harry Reid or Mitch McConnell ever read the Clinton V New York City decision.

Where the Court stated that Congress could not pass their powers from the Constitution to the executive branch. Without a Amendment to the Constitution.

I do not think the Constitution matters to either Party at this point. They are going to move this to after the next election because they both look so stupid. It will be another Bi-Partisan Fiasco.

Vs.

Can't believe some people, on this very site, support McConnell's plan. They would also of support tyrants during the Roman Republic days.

Memo to the FReepers who support McConnell's plan: Democrats never act in good faith and the USA has liabilities the taxpayer can never cover, period. Cutting the budget and ending a bunch of entitlements are the only hope this Country has.

The idea was to trap obama into having to make cuts himself, or not raise the debt. The fly in the ointment is that once he has the funds, obama will simply ignore the "proposed" cuts and move on, leaving the congress gop feeling betrayed and stupid. They will, of course, be both.

You hit the key point, he will ignore the cuts or he will make up the numbers.

The Senator from Rome needs to disclose exactly where his plan originated. Who came up with the idea ? Who wrote it down on paper ? And when was this done ? And he needs to provide evidence asserting his claims.
