Many hyper-militarized sub-cultures end up with that problem. The Theban Sacred Band, certain officers in Alexander the Great and Frederick the Great’s circles, the Grande Armee . . .
These groups get very detached from the societies from which they sprang and tended to become predatory upon the nation they were in theory supposed to advance or protect. One of America’s traditional strengths is the citizen soldier. That goes a long way towards preventing such group insularity and decay.
