Wiggins, Stone County set day of prayer [inspired by "The Response"]

Concern about disasters, terrorism and morality led Stone County supervisors and the Wiggins mayor and Board of Aldermen to pass resolutions declaring Aug. 6 to be a day of prayer, fasting and humility for the city, county state and nation.

...Wiggins Mayor Jerry Alexander said the power of prayer has been evident in his own life.

“There is nothing like the power of prayer,” he said.

“I’m a Christian; I was saved 17 years ago, and I can tell you I wouldn’t be here today otherwise. I believe the Lord is sending us a message -- we are so hard headed, we’re not paying attention to what we’re supposed to do.

“He doesn’t expect us to be perfect, but he does expect us to do better than we’ve been doing. I do believe that’s why we’ve been going through the things we’ve been going through.”

For Lance Pearson....the decision to support was easy.

“Prayer is just one of the main things you need to do,” he said. “We’re a praying board here in Stone County; we want to do what’s right.”

The day of prayer, fasting and humility was inspired by a similar proclamation by Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who cited the global economic downturn, natural disasters, the lingering danger of terrorism and “continued debasement of our culture” as the impetus for the event.

....Faye Cooley, one of the citizens who sought the Stone County resolutions, said she and a friend were having lunch recently, and the conversation turned to Perry’s plans.

“We said that was something needed for the whole country,” she said. “We’re all struggling with debt and other problems. We felt we need to pray for our city, our county, our state and our nation, and it can make a difference. Our forefathers did it.”

I will add this, pray believing, don't just pray. Other than that, if more school boards and city councils would call on the name of Jesus, not some fake, multi “faith’ god. Things would turn around and I believe they are already.

Thank you for a good comment normy.

I’m surprised there haven’t been more comments from Freepers about this town’s decision.

Normally, the topic of beliefs and looking to a higher power generates a lot of discussion and praise.

It's early Saturday morning, they'll come along soon enough. Of course there will be 4 or 5 nuts cutting and pasting anti Perry comments along with insinuating Perry is using God to further his election chances. Oh well, until either Palin or Perry declare or don't declare, this will continue. Once either one decides, it will be time to rally around the one who decides. If both decide, it's gonna get ugly.

Wiggins. A sleepy little town in the piney woods about 35 miles north of Gulfport-Biloxi. In years past, I would take the family there for swimming, camping & they also have great bass fishing. They have a nice lake & recreation area called Flint Creek.
