A spokeswoman for Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg said he was safe. More Photos » The police said they did not know if the man, identified in the Norwegian press as Anders Behring Breivik, was part of a larger conspiracy. He is being questioned under the country’s terrorism laws and is cooperating with the investigation, they said.

“We are not sure whether he was alone or had help,” a police official, Roger Andresen, said at a televised press conference, adding: “What we know is that he is right-wing and a Christian fundamentalist.” So far Mr. Breivik has not been linked to any anti-jihadist groups, he said.

I know some norg. Their prison system is better than most poor peoples’. It’s like a nice hotel and they have internet access.

We’ll see, this guy is probably a factor of that as well.

Two hours after the bomb, surely the Norwegian authorities are not spread so thin that the bomb consumed ALL of their resources and staff?

They had received prior threats, I would expect some sort of advance contingency planning to have taken place.
Terrorist targeting multiple locations is not new, some force should always be held in reserve in case of multiple attacks.

Once a bomb has gone off, the most useful people are the bomb squad and fire departments.
Regular cops have little to contribute beyond crowd control, officers should have been available to respond to the island attack.

“And seriously, regardless of whether FReepers think this some lone nut, or a part of a greater conspiracy.”

It really makes no difference in that those that are dead are just as dead as if they would have been killed by a Muslim terrorist.

And having spent time in Norway, my prayers are with the victims, their families and the country as a whole.

I have been to at least 40 countries, and Norway in the last place I would expect something like this to happen.

The latest report (from Fox) indicate the the police claim they have no idea about the bomb in Oslo including the source, etc.

Does that mean that Oslo is the only major metropolitan city in the world without a large number of cameras covering this city, not to mention any cameras from private businesses or don't they have them there as well?

Unless the answer to both is no, then by now there should be sufficient video to show the source of the explosion (so much devastation indicate a large device and more than likely came from a vehicle of sorts) as well as possibly who the driver(s) were.

Seeing so many are comparing this to the OK City bombing, maybe there will be the same type of effort to cover up the facts of that travesty as well?

Uhm, because it’s the only one we have so far.

And if you see “without question” here, you need your eyes examined. I have not seen a single post from anyone thus far that accepts the “right-wing, Christian” description uncritically.

I agree this guy CANNOT be allowed to live any longer than it takes to hold his trial.

Even if the death penalty is forbidden in Norway, this guy should be an exception.

I bet Norway has some “Old Traditional Ways” to deal with such lunatics, I suspect they involve sharpened steel.

True enough, sad to say.

I was flabbergasted when I heard it yesterday. Norway?!

Last place on Earth I’d of expected. I’ve been to Oslo a few times myself, as well as Stockholm and Uppsala. Scandinavia is a great place.

Yeah well Norway doesn’t have the death penalty and he’ll only serve 21 years in jail.

And from what I’ve seen, the prisons there are basically top level hotels here.

It’s very likely he’ll be given ‘human rights’ of internet access as well.

OK, people, I got the low down now from CNN. They found out he was a,.........wait for it,,........get ready,......you knew it was true,........a Free Mason!

I knew it immediately. I bet he was at the recent Bilderberger meeting too.

I knew he was a Christian when I heard he was shouting "Praise Jesus" as he fired at the kids. I think that's somewhere in Romans or something.

Oh wait,..... can you be a Christian and a Free Mason at the same time? I guess that's only the "fundamentalist" wing of the Christians, right?........No???, I'm so confused.

I’d suggest a drinking game where you take a drink of booze each time the phrase “Tea Party” gets mentioned in stories about this that appear on CNN, MSNBC, etc. (eg. “Whether it’s in the Tea Party in America or this guy in Oslo, right-wing loons are everywhere...”), but I wouldn’t want anyone dying of alcohol poisoning.

It’s a high chance that he is a Muslim terrorist. We still don’t have all the info, at this point neither will the police. Until they look at everything, there is no chance we will have any concrete information at all about this. I think that in the long term, after the police go through everything, there will indeed be substantial connections to terrorists groups that are not Christian or even nationalistic, but Islamic. Already a few jihad organizations are taking full credit and anyone can post anything on their Facebook page. I could claim to be a black male Jew while being a white female Christian.

Pussies. Worthless pussies is all I have to say.

If he was anti-immigrant, why did he kill his own people?

Sounds like a head case who snapped.

The latest report (from Fox) indicate the the police claim they have no idea about the bomb in Oslo

Germany's Spiegel Online is reporting that the Norwegian police consider the guy to be responsible for both the bombing and the shooting. There could be accomplices. That hasn't been ruled out.

Explosives were found on the island, but it's not clear if they were also set up as bombs.

They also say the shooter had 30 minutes before the police arrived. The police were diverted by the Oslo bombing.

The shooter gathered the kids to inform them about the Oslo bombing then opened fire.

The 'Christian fundamentalist' comes from the shooter talking about himself. The Investigation will be long and thorough and the police aren't publicizing any details. IOW, it isn't the police describing him as a Christian fundamentalist.

The island retreat belonged to the political party of the prime minister. The prime minister himself spent time there as a youth.

Spiegel is pretty reliable when reporting news flashes such as this.
