I have to tell ya that these look like art work to me. Awesome nonetheless. After a few weeks in service ANY airplane gets a patchwork paint look due to corrosion control measures, etc. These two look too perfect. They are beautiful though, aren’t they.

The Air Force slang for First Fighter Wing jets is from the initials... Sometimes called the ‘Fast F’ers”...

My friend's husband was a navigator in the USAF during Vietnam.

His five year old daughter was asked to write an essay at school about her father.

She cut out a picture of a man in uniform (happened to be a mail man, but she got the color right!) This was her essay....

"My daddy is in the air force. He wears a uniform and tells the pilot where to go".

God Bless 'em all.....

Around 15 years ago, my Niece was dating an F-15 pilot from Eglin. One day they visited with my parents while I was there. I happened to have just seen an interview with a First Fighter Wing pilot on TV.

I mentioned it to him and he laughed and said among other squadrons, they are known as the “Worst Fighter Wing”. I think he was half way serious.

The 82nd Airborne division refers to the 101St Airborne division as the ‘Hundred and worst’.

Yes that F15 has 4 external gas tanks. The round ones that are obvious under his wings are drop tanks. So named because when moving to an Air to Air engagement the pilot can “drop” or jettison them. It also looks like that particular Eagle is equipped with what they call FAST or Conformal external tanks . They are tanks that are fitted to the side of the aircraft body. They allow carrying extra fuel and sensors, Fuel And Sensor Tactical, while decreasing the drag of the external tanks.

Looks photoshopy to me. I guess “post processing” is standard now.

I totally agree, parts (and I have proof) if not the setup/staging of this picture is photoshopped! Why do we taxpayers pay for this?

Expanding the downloaded “large” file, there are no CFTs on the F-15. As a former F-15E fighter pilot, I am very much aware of what the CFTs look like, So, what you see are externals, engine inlets, as well as AAMRAM and ACMI pod. No CFT's

Closer examination show it is a heater, not ACMI pod.

What ‘proof?”

I've been in flights like that many times. Not unusual nor hard to fly like that.

Those are fun flights though not challenging at all.

Maybe air-brushing the paint job, but as far as the actual flight goes, been there, done that.

We do this for the same reasons we have airshows-—to show taxpayers what we have and what we can do with it.

Actually, 2012 will see the 40th anniversary of the F-15 first flight

You folks really need to go to an airshow where a Raptor is doing a routine. It will bring a tear to your eye. That is one awesome machine. Believe it or not it can hover standing straight up. Turns that will make your head spin and acceleration that is incredible.

BTW I live near the Navy's Top Gun school at NAS Fallon. We see Super Bugs out on runs all the time. An F-18 is nowhere near an F-22 in performance and I see them go vertical all the time. Well out of sight even with optics.

Yes that F15 has 4 external gas tanks.

No he doesn't. F-15C and D (also known as "light grays" or "Fleagle") models do not have the conformal FAST tanks found only on F-15E Strike Eagles (also known as "dark grays" or "Mud Hens".)
