The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced new guidelines in Washington Monday requiring health insurance plans beginning on or after August 1, 2012 to cover several women's preventive services, including birth control and voluntary sterilization.
According to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius the decision is a part of the Affordable Care Act's move to stop problems before they start. "These historic guidelines are based on science and existing literature and will help ensure women get the preventive health benefits they need," she said in a news release.

Why is free birth control bad? Isn’t it already free at clinics?
Greater use of hormone-based contraceptives correlates with increases in sexually-transmitted disease. This has not, of course, stopped our science-based health bureaucracy from pushing hormonal contraceptives on women and girls at ever-younger ages.
Btw, its interesting that all the invective on the thread is directed at women, when every act of conception has to involve a male as well. And even Zero himself, Death-Eater in Chief, is male, at least biologically.

great post.
but they are working on solutions for that too.

Why cover birth control and not Viagra? Both are drugs that allow sex.
And at least Viagra corrects an actual medical condition. Birth control pills have nothing at all to do with curing or treating a medical condition, or preventing any illness.
I don’t have a problem with insurers choosing to cover birth control, but I don’t agree with the federal government mandating it.
There are a number of social and economic reasons. The main economic problem with providing it through insurance is that it is a product that people can reasonably afford and only need through certain periods of their life. When insurance covers it the paperwork and administration add 25% or more to the cost, it opens doors for fraud, and it shields the consumer from the true cost of the product. All this will do is create more bureaucracy, add to the growing cost of health insurance, and the people who weren't responsible enough to use it the first place won't do it anyway.
So now Catholics are forbidden to buy health insurance that comports with their morality. What was that about “if you like your health insurance, you can keep it?”
You’ve got to be kidding me—we’re all supposed to pay now for men’s joy rides beyond what nature, on average, provides? Is there nothing to be left outside the government-funded sphere?
(Birth control, one could at least argue, saves on further costs to cover unwanted pregnancies.)
The list, ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
Actually, birth control does treat conditions in women who are at risk for ovarian cysts and endometryosis.
Honestly, you’ll either pay for their birth control or their children on welfare that will grow up to perpetuate the cycle.
"She had a pulse, and she didn't say no!"
"She was unconscious."
"Yeah, well, she was breating!"
“woman can open their legs freely and without risk of consequences to deal with”
The goal all along - “so that women can have sex like a man”.
well said
More good news for Muslims who want to conquer the West.
Most insurance plans already cover birth control and sterilization, presumably on the grounds that the costs are lower than childbirth and the child’s medical care.
What’s new is the mandate that these drugs and procedures be at no charge to the insured, rather than having the copayments or fees that would otherwise apply to prescription drugs or surgery.
I agree. And then they call the women “whores.”
Wow. My daughter stopped by last night to tell me that she and her husband have decided to start their family. At some point in the not so distant future, God willing, she’s going to stop by and tell me I’m going to be a grandmother.
Super idea, Kathleen.
Let’s first implement it retroactively on you.
