Reid: Joint Committee Must Include Taxes Or Trigger Will Kick In
Real Clear Politics ^ | 8/2/2011

"We've had too much talk the last few days of Republicans as early as this morning, Republican leaders in the Senate saying there will be no revenue. That's not going to happen. Otherwise, the trigger is going to kick in. The only way we can arrive at a fair arrangement for the American people with this joint committee is to have equal sharing. It's going to be painful. Each party if they do the right thing, it's going to be painful for them because to be fair, we have to move forward. There has to be equal spending cuts, there has to be some revenue that matches that," Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) said on the floor of the Senate right before voting started on the debt deal. Increased revenue from taxes was not included in the debt compromise.

Is he not right? The Dems will hold solid on their votes and not come to agreement without tax increases.

What I predict is a substantial tax hike disguised as reform and ‘flattening’ of the code. At least one RINO GOP Senator will go for that. There’s probably already a gentlemen’s agreement about it.

“Why do they assume tax increases will result in higher revenue?”

Because it lets them pretend they are reducing the deficit. The whole thing is based on assumptions, so they come up with “rosy scenarios” which make the deficit reduction look larger. They probably also assumed that the economy would be extremely strong, with unemployment under 1%, that we wouldn’t be at war, etc.

The Republicans get played, again.

The Republicans weren't played. They are in on it.

There was never a chance that the debt commission stuff would be approved anyway. Politicians don’t like to take the risk of voting for specific cuts. It’s safer for them to just let across-the-board cuts be triggered automatically.

TRAITORS! Everyone who voted to raise the debt ceiling - ALL TRAITORS! They are NOT upholding the Constitution.

They all need to be arrested and hauled off to jail. Anyone up for doing some citizens arrests?

The sole purpose of the Republican Party is to serve as an ineffective alternative to the Democrat Party.

We should run Charlie Sheen for President. A man of that upstanding character and seriousness befits our current political class.

“Bush “TAX CUTS” set to expire”

That happened years ago with President Bush and is a totally unrelated issue. Why bring it up here? It’s true that the DEFICIT REDUCTION agreement didn’t pass the whole Republican agenda, but it wasn’t supposed to. The agreement also didn’t strike down gun-banning laws over the entire country, repeal ObamaCare, or do a bunch of other good things.

My point is that the deficit reduction agreement didn’t change anything about Bush’s taxes or raise any other tax.

The truth was there for everyone to read. Tax increases have ALWAYS been part of this bill...just not in the initial “cut.” All smoke and mirrors...again. None of this should surprise anyone.

Obama really rolled Republicans: tax increases or cuts in defense. Nice choice.

No one was rolled. The weak, effete, Republican elite, led by Crybaby Boehner, share the same goals as Harry Reid and the Democrat leadership, maximizing their own positions of privilege and power.
