Palin: House passage of debt deal is a victory for the Tea Party
Hot Air ^ | August 2,2011 | Tina Korbe

Posted on 08/02/2011 2:19:47 PM PDT by Hojczyk

It seems to be the new talking point: The deal is a victory for conservatives not because of what it does (which is, not much!), but because it supposedly represents a change in the direction of the debate. Once, Washington discussed what to grow. Now, Washington discusses what to cut. Even former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has echoed the theme — but with qualifications. The Wall Street Journal Washington Wire reports:

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said Monday’s House vote to lift the debt ceiling was a victory for the tea party, proving that conservative activists had shifted the conversation in Washington.

“We shall take this victory and make sure our politicians in office today are learning from this victory,” Ms. Palin said Monday night on Fox News, where she is a paid contributor. “It’s not a 100% pure genuine victory. We just handed the most liberal president, I believe, in U.S. history a $2.4 billion debt increase.” …

Ms. Palin didn’t fully embrace the deal, saying she had plenty of problems with the compromise between the White House and congressional leaders, including Republican House Speaker John Boehner. In the past, the former governor said she was not convinced America would face a default if lawmakers did not raise the debt ceiling by Aug. 2.

Meanwhile, Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), one of the founders of the Tea Party Caucus in Congress (along with GOP presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann), says the deal can’t possibly be touted as a win.

“The Tea Party is not calling this a victory,” Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) said today on Fox News. “I’m certainly not.”

Right, one has PDS if one doesn't agree that there is something good about the debt ceiling. Lots of luck selling that.

I'm not sure what you think I'm missing.

Palin gave kudos to the Tea Party for helping frame the debate and later she says we got a bill which she says was a victory (though not absolute, pure 100% victory because there are things in there she doesn't like) and she called it a step in the right direction. Yes, she said other things too but I point out these things because some are saying they aren't there.

I agree with her. And I also agree with her that Biden is vile.

Understanding the circumstance during this exchange, I don't fault her for the comments, though I wish she would have corrected Greta on using the word 'victory.'

People must realize that all of this 'victory' talk has only one purpose - that is, to once again hijack the debate and the terms of exchange. All the Dems and the media are using the word 'victory.' That alone should make us skeptical. They are trying to avoid having to admit that this is the largest debt ceiling hike ever, and contains no legitimate spending cuts.

Reid, Pelosi, Boxer - would never openly admit defeat of any kind. They fact that they are calling this a Republican victory and giving any credit to the Tea Party - is a joke.

I watched the interview. Palin was pleased with the Tea Party influence, but less than thrilled with the result.

As I already replied to the OP, the headline was just a bit (sarcasm) misleading.

I have to admit, I haven't seen or heard Huntsman's response. In fact, I haven't seen or heard him at all in weeks.

BTW, I HATE the result.

Hey, good on you for being active.

Here’s a piece of advice for you though:

Don’t meddle with things you don’t understand.

Do you wish for me to do research for you? Find threads for you?

Or have you seen them all, thus your assertion?

Somehow I reckon you have no clue.

What exactly is your problem? The fact that I don’t fawn over a potential candidate?

Really? Just that? Or is it something else?

Try, if you can, to articulate your trouble.
We’ll see if we can fix it for you.

It was a step, but NOT a victory.

To say we won because we put up a good fight, is like saying Bama won the Iron Bowl in 2010 because they dominated the first half. However, in the end, Bama LOST THE GAME AND WE LOST THIS BILL.

Yes, we put up a good fight and scared the bejeebers out of them. That is why they are trying hard to convince us that we won. They are hoping we’ll take our victory and be satisfied with it.

At the end of the day, the debt ceiling has been raised. Our taxes will go up in 2013 and we have vague promises of some futuristic, nebulous, spending cuts.

We lost this one.

No way they give Bachman a leadership position in the House after the way she bucked Boner.

And I think she’s much better candidate than Palin at least oratorically. did you hear Palin on Greta last night? Come on I love but sometimes the way she speaks makes Bush sound like Churchill.

VAN SUSTEREN: Well, you know, I think — it will be interesting to see what happens. The Tea Party, I think, had an enormous victory, because they did change the discussion here in Washington. It’s a little bit like trying to change the direction of an aircraft carrier. It’s not easy. So they certainly, I mean, that’s huge. And I’m sort of curious whether the American people will now sort of take a bow, those who are Tea Party activists, and go back to their lives, which are very busy and very full, and they’re worried about their own lives, or whether this is now going to — now they’ll take this victory and move on. I don’t know.

PALIN: Well, I think that we shall take this victory and make sure that our politicians in office today are learning from this victory, realizing that it’s not 100 percent pure, genuine victory because realize, Greta, we just handed the most liberal president, I believe, in U.S. history a $2.4 trillion debt increase. We’re allowing him to increase the budget even more, and without guaranteed cuts, and without guaranteed reforms. And we have to make sure that we realize that, yes, this is a victory, because Tea Party patriots did shift the debate. However, there’s so much more work to do in order to get the economy back on the right track and to restore the exceptionalism that is America.

First of all, I’m not looking for oratory skills. I’m only interested in results and Palin has a proven track record. I’m watching her on Hannity right now. She is doing an awesome job.

Michelle Bachmann most certainly can get a leadership position in the next congress. The tea party will be the governing majority after this next election. At least that should be our goal and Bachmann could be a big part of that, ensuring she will yield hefty power in a leadership position. I like Bachmann but she is nowhere near as effective as Palin.

“I like Bachmann but she is nowhere near as effective as Palin.”

I’m not looking for oratory skills either, I’m just pointing out that Bachman would make a more articulate candidate. On top of that, her resume is solid and unwavering. Her votes match her words and she sticks to principles. Not that Palin wouldn’t, it;s just that Palin doesn’t have the “spotlight” votes behind her (ObamCare, Dect Ceiling, Stimulus, etc).

Where Bachman can say I voted against these things. Palin, like every other candidate can only say, I would have voted against them.

Also, lets be honest Palin did resign as Governor. I don;t care and she can spin it any way she wants but the fact is the fact and it’s a simple concept for the general public to understand - quit vs. titanium spine.

Keep in mind Palin is the only other Republican candidate I will support in 2012, but until she drops out, I’ll support Bachman.

In the very short time RS has been here, he has supposedly gone from Palin to Bachmann to Perry.

At one point he CLAIMED Palin was his first choice, now he only trashes her...The latest he CLAIMS Palin said that the debt deal was good.

He knows he is lying when he says that, I know every word she has said on this...she was being charitable when she used the word victory talking to Gretta, what was she supposed to do trash Ryan etc?

Sarah was very clear where she stood on this, she said she was against the debt limit increase, however as a realist she knew that it would go up and that under that realism CUT CAP BALANCE was the best option mentioned.

I think RS is just playing us all for entertainment and he is really a Democrat.

Your focus is obviously not on reading comprehension.

As I posted, I was simply comparing Palin & Bachman as to strength as candidates on a variety of fronts .

Whether you like it or not communication is important. In my opinion, based on watching each of them in interview settings, Bachman is a better communicator of conservative principles. I’m not saying Palin isn’t conservative or can’t articulate conservatism...bachman is just better at it.

Oh yes it is! Because your focus is off - so now you must reply someone else's is off.

Like I said - wrong focus. Palin has accomplishments to back up her very easily understood speech. Anyone serious about this election is hardly going to focus on who is 'the better communicator' like liberals do.
